Congratulations to Dr. Annie Rhodes on being recognized as a Rising Star by the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Richmond.

Wisdom Watch Alliance owes part of its beginnings to the guidance, encouragement, and example of leaders like Dr. Rhodes, whose mentorship, collegiality, and spirit of collaboration have helped shape our co-founders. Throughout the years, she has modeled something increasingly rare and deeply valuable: Mutual respect across disciplines, generations, and experiences.

We are grateful for her leadership, partnership, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of older adults and their families. This recognition is both fitting and well deserved.

Congratulations to Dr. Annie Rhodes on receiving the 2026 Rising Star Award from the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Richmond 🌟

This award honors community leaders, advocates, and care facilities that have championed dementia inclusion, raised vital funds and expanded local community awareness.

Dr. Rhodes' dedication to furthering Alzheimer's awareness through her work with the Virginia Memory Project and Alzheimer's Association demonstrate her passion for advocacy.

Today, Wisdom Watch Alliance had the privilege of partnering with RVA Financial, the Alzheimer’s Association, and Carnelian Wealth Solutions for a meaningful conversation about caregiving, finances, and brain health.

Hosted in the boardroom at RVA Financial, the gathering was intimate and the conversation was rich. Around the table were individuals representing a wide range of experiences and perspectives, including caregivers, social work, residential care, care advocacy, financial services, and education. The diversity of lived experience created a powerful exchange of ideas and insights.

One message came through clearly: caregiving often carries a significant financial burden. Many families find themselves paying for care out of their own pockets, and a lack of early planning or awareness of available resources can make difficult care decisions even more challenging.

We also explored a reality that resonated with many in the room—the culture of silence that often surrounds conversations about money, long-term care, and end-of-life planning in the African American community. For some families, these discussions can be accompanied by fear, apprehension, or concern that questions may be misinterpreted as attempts to control or take advantage of a loved one. Yet avoiding these conversations can leave families unprepared when important decisions must be made.

The discussion also highlighted the unique financial challenges associated with dementia. Unlike many acute illnesses, people may live for years—sometimes more than a decade—with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. As a result, dementia is among the most costly chronic health conditions for families, often requiring long-term support, supervision, and care.

Another sobering statistic shared during today’s discussion was that victims of elder financial exploitation can lose tens of thousands of dollars. Some studies have found average losses approaching $40,000 per victim, underscoring the importance of financial planning, trusted support systems, and safeguards against exploitation.

These conversations are layered and complex. There is no single solution, and no single conversation is enough. Progress happens one conversation, one family, and one community gathering at a time.

For those who missed today’s program, the good news is that there will be another installment of the series on the second Saturday in August at RVA Financial. Here is the link to register: https://form.jotform.com/261044143302037

We will also continue offering opportunities for attendees to learn about brain health, including free brain health check-ins provided by Wisdom Watch Alliance.

We are in this together as a community. By talking openly about caregiving, finances, brain health, and planning for the future, we can replace fear with preparation and isolation with support.

Hope you will join us tomorrow for “Caring with Clarity” at RVA Financial. Link to register: https://form.jotform.com/26...

Caring with Clarity: A Free Workshop Series for Caregivers and Families

If someone you love is living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, you do not have to navigate the journey alone.

Wisdom Watch Alliance is honored to partner with the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Richmond, Carnelian Wealth Solutions, and RVA Financial Federal Credit Union to present Caring with Clarity, a free three-part workshop series designed to provide practical guidance, trusted resources, and meaningful support for caregivers and families.

📅 June 13 | July 11 | August 8
🕙 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
📍 TJA Credit Union Center
1700 Robinhood Road, Richmond, VA 23220

Workshop Topics

✔️ In-home care and caregiver support resources
✔️ Healthcare proxies, trusts, and beneficiary planning
✔️ Financial considerations for caregiving families
✔️ Guidance for later-stage and advanced dementia care

Brain Check-Ins Available

During the second hour of each workshop, Wisdom Watch Alliance will offer complimentary Brain Check-Ins (cognitive screenings) for community members interested in learning more about their memory and cognitive health.

These screenings are educational and informational in nature and are designed to help participants better understand brain health, recognize potential concerns, and identify appropriate next steps when needed.

At Wisdom Watch Alliance, we believe that early conversations matter. Too many individuals and families wait until a crisis occurs before seeking answers. By creating opportunities for education, awareness, and screening in trusted community settings, we hope to encourage proactive brain health and support earlier intervention when appropriate.

Whether you are currently providing care, anticipating future caregiving responsibilities, concerned about your own memory, or simply seeking reliable information, you are welcome.

Congratulations to Circle Center Adult Day Services on 50 years of service to older adults, caregivers, and families in our community✨

At Wisdom Watch Alliance, we recognize that adult day programs are an essential part of building dementia-friendly, age-friendly, and caregiver-friendly communities. They provide opportunities for connection, meaningful engagement, purpose, dignity, and joy while offering critical support and respite for family caregivers.

It is especially meaningful that Circle Center grew from the vision of five neighboring churches that came together in 1976 to meet a need they saw among older adults and caregivers. What began with just two staff members and five participants has grown into a trusted community resource serving more than 100 individuals and their families.

As conversations about brain health, cognitive change, caregiving, and healthy aging continue to grow, organizations like Circle Center remind us that community-based support matters. Families are stronger when caregivers are supported, and older adults thrive when they remain connected, engaged, valued, and seen.

We extend our gratitude to Circle Center’s staff, participants, volunteers, supporters, and founding churches for five decades of compassionate service. Your work reflects a simple but powerful truth: Every person deserves dignity, belonging, purpose, and joy at every stage of life.

Congratulations on this remarkable milestone and thank you for helping to strengthen the fabric of our community for 50 years. 💜
