🛑 Think Slavery is Over? Think Again. 🛑

Modern slavery exists, fueled by systemic racism and constitutional loopholes. It's time for change!

Why Amending Virginia's Constitution Matters:
- 📜 Without language explicitly protecting our citizens from slavery, we fall prey to the "exception clause" of the 13th Amendment, which permits slavery as punishment for crime.
- ⚖️ This legal loophole disproportionately affects marginalized communities.

Systemic Racism's Role:
- 📰 Directly following the Civil War, Southern states including VA passed Black Codes, criminalizing life for newly freed Black Americans, re-enslaving them for labor extraction as well as racial control
- 🚫 Prison labor continues to perpetuate exploitation and inequality today.
- 🔍 Hinders safety and justice for all.

Tips to Make a Difference:
- 🗳️ Call your VA Representative and ask them to support legislation ENDING SLAVERY as punishment for crime. Slavery has no place in our state.
- 📢 Raise awareness through conversations and social media.

Yesterday, Kenneth Hunter and I joined the Hampton Roads Show to share how the HOPE program is breaking cycles, building futures, and creating real change for youth impacted by the justice system. Every conversation brings us one step closer to a brighter path for our kids.

The Hope Program aims to support children whose parents are incarcerated.

🚨 Parental incarceration is an invisible sentence for children.
When a parent is locked up, the entire family does time—especially the children.

📉 Kids with incarcerated parents are:
• 6 times more likely to become incarcerated themselves
• More likely to struggle with depression, anxiety, and behavioral issues
• Often face stigma, shame, and silence from schools and peers
• At higher risk of dropping out and falling into the school-to-prison pipeline

This isn’t just about justice—it’s about the next generation.
We need trauma-informed support, stronger family connection policies, and real investment in our youth.

🧡 Let’s talk about it. Let’s change it.
