Slavery was never fully abolished—it was preserved as punishment for a crime.

And today, Virginia’s Constitution still contains no explicit prohibition against slavery or involuntary servitude.

That legal gap has real consequences. It allows incarcerated people to be compelled to work for pennies while governments and private corporations benefit—and leaves people in immigration detention vulnerable to the same systems of coercion and exploitation.

We are fighting to amend Virginia’s Constitution to make the promise of freedom absolute.

No loopholes. No exceptions. No slavery—period.

Too often, we respond only after harm, while the school-to-prison pipeline and mass incarceration keep cycling harm. Let’s disrupt that. We need to invest in real solutions: tackling poverty, reforming schools, and stopping incarceration before it begins. Justice is building communities where prisons aren’t the default.

🛑 Think Slavery is Over? Think Again. 🛑

Modern slavery exists, fueled by systemic racism and constitutional loopholes. It's time for change!

Why Amending Virginia's Constitution Matters:
- 📜 Without language explicitly protecting our citizens from slavery, we fall prey to the "exception clause" of the 13th Amendment, which permits slavery as punishment for crime.
- ⚖️ This legal loophole disproportionately affects marginalized communities.

Systemic Racism's Role:
- 📰 Directly following the Civil War, Southern states including VA passed Black Codes, criminalizing life for newly freed Black Americans, re-enslaving them for labor extraction as well as racial control
- 🚫 Prison labor continues to perpetuate exploitation and inequality today.
- 🔍 Hinders safety and justice for all.

Tips to Make a Difference:
- 🗳️ Call your VA Representative and ask them to support legislation ENDING SLAVERY as punishment for crime. Slavery has no place in our state.
- 📢 Raise awareness through conversations and social media.
