Today, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we join the world in honoring the memory of the six million Jews and the countless others who were persecuted, dehumanized, and murdered during the Holocaust.

This day marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau—one of the most infamous symbols of hatred, violence, and genocide. For those imprisoned there, liberation was not relief—it was the first breath after years of terror, starvation, forced labor, and unimaginable cruelty. Many were too sick to stand. Many were children who had never known safety. Many never lived to see that day at all.

As we reflect, we are reminded that the Holocaust was not only a moment of history—it was a systematic attempt to erase entire communities. Among the victims were Jews, Roma and Sinti people, political prisoners, people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and others targeted by hateful ideology. Families were torn apart.
Cultures were devastated. Generations were silenced.

We remember their humanity.
We honor their stories.
We grieve their loss.

At We Are The Others, remembrance is more than a day—it is a continued act of solidarity. It is a commitment to stand against antisemitism, bigotry, and all ideologies that seek to divide or dehumanize. It is the promise to ensure that “never again” is not just said, but lived.

We won’t forget.
We stand with hope.
We reaffirm our collective promise to protect human dignity—for all people, everywhere.

Yesterday was quite a day.

After hearing of another death in Minnesota, our board, staff, and some core volunteers held a moment of silence. As we gathered together for our first annual board retreat, we committed that all we do in WATO ties to each of us treating all with dignity.

I am deeply humbled and proud of our group as we come together to support and shape how we show up. A lot of nonprofits don’t make it through year one, hiring a staff member, or getting a tax exempt 501(c)3 status. We did all of that while being a volunteer lead organization.

We just celebrated our 1 year birthday in Jan 2.

And together we assisted 1537 cases of clients (someone with a challenge or need).

Our board retreat was filled with hope, passion, commitment, drive, integrity, goals, joy and laughter, and an example of what it means to be in community together.

To take our thoughts and desires to be of assistance and help, and give a way together we can create a better society and community.

We want to welcome our newest board member Jamie Allen Vaughn.

Together we continue to be a community of solidarity for vulnerable populations. And build a network of technology with compassion of human care managers so those who have a need can have the resources and support to aid them (confidentially, at no-cost, nationwide).

Thank you all for this journey.

Not “Happy,” but Hopeful.

Dr. King taught that “hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” He also reminded us to “stick with love…hate is too great a burden to bear.” Today isn’t a greeting-card holiday—it’s a day of conscience and service. It’s the only U.S. federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service, created so we move beyond words and show up for one another.

Across the country, people are gathering—in volunteer projects, vigils, and peaceful demonstrations. In Minnesota, communities have filled streets and public squares after recent ICE‑related shootings and a surge in federal enforcement; officials have urged peace, courts have set limits on crowd‑control tactics, and many are calling for solidarity actions. However you participate today—serve, learn, march, or simply look out for a neighbor—do it with care for people’s safety and dignity.

At We Are The Others (WATO), we believe kindness is a commitment. Our work is one small thread in what Dr. King called the Beloved Community—a society grounded in love, justice, and shared responsibility, built not by sentiment but by deliberate action.

If saying “Happy MLK Day” feels weird, try this:
Today, we’re grateful to be together in solidarity—friends, neighbors, and coworkers—doing the work of care.

Please like and follow us. We are looking to connect with as many like minded people who believe in human dignity.

3 ways to live it now (10 minutes or less):

- Text someone who’s struggling and offer one concrete help (a ride, a meal, a resource).
- Share WATO’s resource link with one person who might need it.
- Sign up for a 1‑hour volunteer shift this month.
