A rock can teach geology. It can also start a conversation about communication, mindfulness and empathy.

One teacher told us that Sierra Nevada Journeys’ “Meet a Rock” activity stood out because it connects Social Emotional Learning with geology in a way students can experience for themselves.

Science gives us a lot to talk about when we put something real in students’ hands.

You know a lesson landed when students are still talking about it later.

Samantha, lead teacher at Regency Park Elementary, told us students were discussing the adaptations and other things they learned on the trails back at their cabins and during meals.

“Students absolutely loved all the fun games and science talks that took place throughout. They didn’t even realize they were learning because the activities were so enjoyable. They were talking about the adaptations and interesting things they learned out on the trails back at their cabins and during meals.”

That’s what hands-on learning can do. The lesson doesn’t end when the activity does.

We recently welcomed CAL FIRE Lassen-Modoc Unit to camp as they worked on a hazardous fuel reduction project using mechanical and manual treatments. These efforts help reduce flammable vegetation, lessen potential wildfire intensity, and create safer conditions for our camp, neighboring communities, and firefighters.
We’re grateful to CAL FIRE for helping protect our communities, open spaces, and the land we’re fortunate to call home. 🌲🔥

Sometimes the best part of an outdoor science lesson starts with, “Wait, what is that?”

One Hunter Lake fifth-grade student had exactly that moment:

“I found a crawdad, and it is so cool because it was just sitting there!”

That excitement matters. When students have time to slow down, look closely and follow their curiosity, science becomes something happening right in front of them.

Two weeks at camp can hold a lot of memories. This summer, Tahoe Family Solutions brought its Camp Explorers program to Sierra Nevada Journeys for two weeks of learning, adventure and plenty of time outside.

We’re feeling especially grateful for our incredible partners at the Sacramento Valley Conservancy for recognizing Sierra Nevada Journeys at their wonderful Treasures of the Valley event earlier this week.

Our partnership with SVC dates back to 2009, when Sierra Nevada Journeys first brought Sacramento-area students to SVC’s Deer Creek Hills for nature explorations through our Classrooms Unleashed program.

More than 15 years later, we’re still bringing students outdoors to learn, explore and experience those Aha Moments together. We’re so grateful for this long-standing partnership and this special recognition.

Thank you to our board members and employees who were on hand to celebrate the evening. It was also great to spend time with our good friends at Sacramento Splash.
