An excellent write-up in EdWeek about this week’s congressional briefing, where I participated alongside a coalition of school-based health professionals.

We urged Congress to address the growing shortage of school-based mental health providers, especially after the Trump administration cut roughly $1 billion in grants meant to strengthen the pipeline of mental health professionals working in schools.

Students cannot wait. Fully staffed school-based health teams are essential to student success.

If we want healthier students and stronger schools, we have to invest in the people who support students every day.

This week, I was on Capitol Hill with the School-Based Health Alliance for briefings in both the House and Senate.

I was proud to represent school social workers and highlight our role in supporting students, families, mental health, and school success.

Student success takes a team — school social workers, school counselors, school psychologists, school nurses, educators, families, and community partners working together.

I’m grateful to stand alongside ASCA, NASP, NASN, SSWAA, and the School-Based Health Alliance, where our professions recognize and respect the value each discipline brings.

But back home in Delaware, school social workers are still fighting for that same respect.

Even with similar education, credentials, licensure, and responsibilities, Delaware school social workers are still fighting for pay parity with other school-based mental health professionals.

This is about fairness, respect, retention, and making sure students have the full support team they need.

If we value the whole child, we have to value all the professionals who support them School Social Workers Association of Delaware School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA)

Our thoughts on Delaware Senate Bills 302 and 303 - these bills are long-overdue steps toward fixing Delaware’s outdated school funding system. They would create a more flexible, transparent, and equitable model that better supports students with greater needs, including low-income students, multilingual learners, students in special education, and career and technical education students.

Learn how Senate Bill 302 could create equitable funding framework for Delaware schools.

Delaware HB 94 heads to the Senate floor!

As immigration enforcement ramps up and parents grow afraid to send their children to school, HB 94 helps protect schools and other sensitive spaces—so students and families can safely access education and essential services without fear.

I created this video with the ACLU of Delaware 🎥 to explain why this bill matters.

Now we need people to show up ✊🏼

Please take a few minutes to email our state senators now or make public comment when HB 94 comes to the floor.

Tell them: Students can’t learn if they don’t feel safe.

If we want to protect the learning environment, we have to be willing to fight for it.

In Delaware, school board elections are decided by a small fraction of voters.

I penned a piece for the ACLU of Delaware on why the May 12 school board elections matter—and what they mean for our students.

Good school board candidates understand the connection between student safety, mental health, attendance, and learning.

🗳️ Take a few minutes to check out the ACLU site to learn about the candidates and get out and vote on May 12th.

Showing up for public education ✊🏼

This week in Washington, D.C., I represented Delaware educators on the National Education Association Board during Superweek.

On Capitol Hill, we pushed for public education funding, defended immigrant students, and protected voting rights—alongside two full days of board and committee work.

We also honored NEA President Becky Pringle as she closes out an extraordinary presidency of the nation’s largest labor union, and stood in solidarity at May Day with educators, workers, and families—because we’ll keep fighting for every student.

Sharing photos from the week below.

Our students deserve more than policies that put them at risk.

Returned to D.C. this week to advocate for Delaware educators and students with our congressional leaders.

We pushed for strong public education funding, protections for immigrant students and families, and safeguards for voting rights.

Grateful for every opportunity to uplift the voices of our educators and strengthen public education ✊🏼

Public education is not separate from the labor movement - it is at the heart of it.

Educators are workers. Students are our why. Our working conditions are our students' learning conditions.

We need safe schools, fully funded classrooms, and the freedom for every child to learn without fear.

On May Day, we stand united because when we fight for public education, we fight for justice ✊🏼
