A downtown landmark with stories on every shelf 📚✨ The Redwood City Public Library has been part of the community for generations, with Redwood City’s library roots dating all the way back to 1865, making it one of the earliest public library systems in California.
Over the years, the library has evolved from a small reading room into the downtown gathering space locals know today. The current Downtown Library opened in 1989 after the historic fire station building was transformed into a modern public library, later earning the 1992 Library of the Year Award and multiple national 5-star recognitions.
Today, the library continues to serve as a hub for learning, history, and community connection, housing the Karl Vollmayer Local History Room with thousands of archived photographs, newspapers, maps, and records documenting Redwood City’s story from the 1850s to today.
