RCSD KICKS-OFF NAMING PROCESS FOR ATHERTON SPANISH IMMERSION SITERedwood City School District (RCSD) has begun the process to name the district's Atherton site where it houses its Spanish Immersion program.

The school campus is in need of a permanent name after the Spanish Immersion program at Adelante Spanish Immersion School, previously located at 3150 Granger Way in Redwood City, merged with the Spanish Immersion strand at Selby Lane School, which is the Atherton site and is located at 170 Selby Lane in Atherton. The programs merged as a result of the school district's process called Planning for our Future to rethink how to focus on the organization's mission: Educating Every Child for Success. This process was undertaken due to an independent financial consultant's conclusion that with declining enrollment, RCSD could not sustain 16 schools with the then 7,500 student enrollment.

While the Planning for our Future process to restructure the organization needed to take place for the mentioned reasons, it was important to the Board of Trustees and the RCSD community for the school district to maintain its unique and award-winning programs intact. The district's Spanish Immersion program, honored by the Embassy of Spain, is one of those programs. On November 28, 2018, the Board of Trustees accepted the recommendation by voting to bring together both programs and merge them on the much-larger Atherton site.

With the Spanish Immersion program operating in Atherton since the start of the 2019-20 school year, the school district now invites members of the RCSD community to participate in the school naming process by providing their input. The site has been operating under the temporary name of Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School , which was decided on by a transition team that was formed at the end of the 2018-19 school year to help both communities come together.

Following Board Policy 7310, the school district's policy for Naming of District Facilities, suggestions from the public will be gathered by the School Naming Committee. This committee is made up of parents, school staff, and Atherton community members, which were nominated by the school principal. The committee will work with a facilitator to develop a list of recommended names to submit to the Superintendent.

The committee will give consideration to:Deceased individuals who have made a significant social contribution at the local, state or national level. If an individual name is proposed, only the last name will symbolize the official name.Names of communities or geographic locations served by the school, including roads and landmarks.Other meaningful names reflecting the school's vision and mission
Individuals interested in making a suggestion as well as the School Naming Committee will follow this process:Friday, February 21, 3 PM - Deadline to submit public input on potential names. RCSD community members can click here to submit their suggestions as the School Naming Committee will only consider suggestions submitted through this process.

Friday, March 6, 3 PM - The School Naming Committee reviews the suggestions made by the public and submits three recommendations to Superintendent Baker.

Wednesday, March 11, 2020 - The Superintendent reviews and submits his recommendation to the School Board for its consideration at the scheduled Board meeting. The public School Board meeting takes place at 7 PM at the District Office, 750 Bradford St. in Redwood City.

Wednesday, March 11, 2020 - First of two public hearings for the RCSD community to address the Board of Trustees on the permanent name for the Atherton Spanish Immersion site. The public hearing will take place during the regular School Board meeting, which is scheduled for 7 PM at the District Office, 750 Bradford St. in Redwood City.

Wednesday, March 18, 2020 - Second of two public hearings for the RCSD community to address the Board of Trustees on the permanent name for the Atherton Spanish Immersion site. The public hearing will take place during the regular School Board meeting, which is scheduled for 7 PM at the District Office, 750 Bradford St. in Redwood City.

Wednesday, March 18, 2020 - The RCSD Board of Trustees votes on the permanent name for the Atherton Spanish Immersion site.

The new name for 170 Selby Lane in Atherton will take effect as of the 2020-21 school year.

As you may have heard, Selby Lane School is changing. Instead of being a K-8 school where 50% of K-5 is Spanish Immersion, it transitioned to a TK-5 school with 100% of the students in the Spanish Two Way Immersion Program. Families in the area are very excited about this change as Adelante (the other Spanish immersion school in the district) students will now attend this location. In fact, soon after this announcement, the waitlist for Kindergarten spiked for English-speaking Kindergarten applicants. Total enrollment is now at 720 students.

The new school is called Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School. They are implementing the 90-10, Two Way Immersion model which research has found to be the most effective way to get all students fully bilingual by the end of 5th grade. In this model, half of the class is comprised of students from native English speaking families and the other half comes from native Spanish speaking families. The “90-10” part of the model refers to the language of instruction used by the teacher: in Kindergarten, 90% of the instruction will be in Spanish and 10% will be in English. 10% English instruction is added every year until 4th grade when instruction will be taught 50% in English and 50% in Spanish. This is very different from a traditional “bilingual” program where the same material is translated every other paragraph and students can “tune out” or not pay attention during the time the teacher is speaking in their non-home language. Teachers are trained in language acquisition strategies and must possess a valid BCLAD certificate to teach in the immersion setting.

The previous Adelante School had a thriving parent non-profit called Unidos/Adelante PTO. Unidos PTO raises money for a variety of extracurricular programs (e.g., Dance, Garden, field trips) and will continue to do so for the merged Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion school. As such, we have, in a sense, become redundant and will start closing our non-profit. If you wish to continue to support the school, you can do so by donating to their non-profit at unidospto.org or directly to the school.

We want to thank you once more for all your generosity over the 15 years. If you wish to tour the school, their phone number is 650-482-2415.

Sincerely,

Jenny Brown Redo
President and Board Chair

While not related to the foundation, this does affect the children who walk to school each day from ECR. Looks like we will not see any improvement at the ECR/Selby Intersection anytime soon:
