Last month, CAMTB joined the Outdoor Alliance D.C. Fly-In with 60+ climbers, paddlers, cyclists, runners, and hikers. Together, we held 100+ meetings with federal lawmakers on recreation and public lands policy, reiterating how important our public lands are to the health and vitality of our communities across the country.

New this year: CAMTB, IMBA, and SORBA organized an extra lobbying day just for cycling and trails. Our national team of cycling delegates included representatives from CAMTB, IMBA, Outdoor Alliance, Bikepacking Roots, SORBA, Pennsylvania Interscholastic Cycling League, Chugach Mountain Bike Riders, and Arkansas Northwoods.

Our discussions focused on the work ahead in 2027:
- Funding for BOLT projects
- More funding for the Recreational Trails Program
- Reauthorizing the Legacy Restoration Fund
- What’s next for e-bike and e-moto legislation

Huge thanks to all who participated and a special thanks to IMBA for lining up our meetings.

More trails, better trails starts with showing up. πŸ™Œ

An e-moto is not an e-bike. Now it's official. βœ…

Governor Newsom has signed SB 1167 (Blakespear) into law, drawing a clear line between low-powered, pedal-assist e-bikes and the high-powered e-motos and e-mopeds too often marketed as "e-bikes."

Why a mountain bike organization cares:
🚡 Keeps e-bikes bike-like. Class 1 pedal-assist e-MTBs stay true to what they were meant to be: an equalizer that lets more riders get out and ride together.
🏷️ Honest labels. A motor-driven cycle can no longer be sold as an "e-bike."
🌲 Protects access. When a 40 mph machine shows up on a multi-use trail, e-bikes take the blame. Clear definitions help land managers tell the difference and protect access for riders on every kind of bike.

Huge thanks to Senator Blakespear and to our advocacy partners California Bicycle Coalition and PeopleForBikes for leading the charge on this one. πŸ™Œ

Big changes could be coming to motorized travel on our National Forests, and that matters for every trail user. The U.S. Forest Service is rewriting its Travel Management Rule, which governs motorized travel on National Forest System lands. The proposal would shift toward an "open unless closed" approach, presuming existing routes are open unless closure is required.

The proposal includes some things we support:
βœ… Clarified access for Class 1 pedal-assist e-bikes
βœ… Expanded options for adaptive equipment
βœ… Digital, downloadable motor vehicle use maps

While some of it raises real concerns:
⚠️ Presuming routes are open doesn't make them maintainable. The Forest Service faces an estimated $11.4 billion in deferred maintenance, and in 2025 volunteers and partners did more than 60% of its trail maintenance work.
⚠️ A broad definition of "existing" routes could sweep in informal, unevaluated trails.
⚠️ Undefined terms like "minor" and "substantive" could decide whether the public gets a say.

The first comment period has closed. The next chance to weigh in comes with the Draft Environmental Impact Statement, expected in spring 2027.

Until then, get up to speed on what's proposed and where CAMTB stands. Our full analysis: camtb.org/2026/09/18/usfs-travel-management/

The Dreambike results are in, and this was our biggest fundraiser EVER. πŸŽ‰ Together we raised over $82,000 for cycling, trails, and public lands in California. That beats last year by $5K, and more than half of it goes straight back to local trail programs. Congrats to our winners!
