Walking in the Heat

Today, my day was interrupted with driving my wife around town to run errands. In fact she has not driven in 2 years . Post stroke I went 3 years without driving. Since I am now driving again, I do all the driving. I enjoy chauffeuring Yvette around town and I always manage to get my 10,000 steps no matter where we go.

Support

One lesson I learned as I recovered from my stroke was to lean on my support. The road to recovery is not a solo journey. Your family, friends, therapists and church is my support system. Asking for help is a sign of strength, it is not a sign of weakness.

Walking Upstairs Consistency 2

To recover from your stroke, you must be consistent in your practice. Whatever you are trying to improve, you must do it again and again and again. For example, I could not walk up stairs without using the handrails because of my balance. One day I went up stairs successfully. I kept doing this. In fact, I started going up the stairs every day. I added 1 trip upstairs everyday. After 1 week, I was walking upstairs 6 times a day everyday. Every morning for 6 months, I walked upstairs without using the handrails 6 times a day. 30 days x 6 = 180 times per month for 6 months =1080 times upstairs. Consistency!
Now with concentration, I can walk up stairs without using the handrails. This did not happen by accident. As you see, this was strategically planned and carried out with consistency. See video.

Consistency

As human beings, we want results immediately. As a stroke survivor, I would like to share a SECRET with you. It is CONSISTENCY. I had over 20 impairments after my stroke. The most noticeable one was I couldn’t walk, therefore I focused on learning to walk again. When I finally took my first few steps, it was on. I knew my temporary setback would be a major comeback. Whatever I did that day when I first walked, I did it again. I did it again. I did it again and again the same day. I did it again until I got bored doing it again. Then I increased it by 25%. I did it again and again and again and again the same day. I made a game out of this and I learned a lot about myself. I never thought about quitting because I was too busy playing this game. This game has gotten pretty big now. I am on TV all the time now because I take over 10,000 steps every day. Whatever you can do, do it consistently, at least daily. After awhile double up. Be consistent!

WALK WOBBLY

Before my stroke, I loved to dance. One of my favorite dances was the Wobble. Then I had a stroke, and for three months I could not stand or walk. I had to learn how to walk all over again.

Today, I work very hard on my walking and balance. Walking became my job. Early in my recovery, my wife told me that I only had one job—to get well. Getting well has been my full-time job for almost five years.

Whether I am going to church, Walmart, or anywhere else, I try to put on my best walk. I am conscious of how I walk everywhere I go. Every step matters.

Despite taking more than 14,000,000 steps since my stroke, I still occasionally wobble when I walk, especially when I am tired or sleepy. When that happens, I know it is time to get off my feet and rest. I have learned to listen to my body.

Some people may see the wobble, but I see the progress. There was a time when I could not stand. There was a time when I could not take a single step. Today, I am walking, living, and continuing to recover.

Wobble or not, I have come a long way. Every step is a reminder of God’s grace, mercy, and faithfulness in my life. I thank Him for bringing me this far, and I trust Him to carry me the rest of the way.
