Update on the canal dredging project: All the silt curtains have been removed from the navigable areas of the canal. Water clarity, depth and width are amazing for this time of year! Big thank you to all who have supported this effort. We are not done yet, so be ready for 2025 - The Finale - with a little more fund raising and a little more work in the Spring

We’ve had some people ask how it was determined that dredging was the most efficient solution to minimize the harmful nutrients which flow into Lower Twin Lake and wreak havoc on its natural ecosystem, so we thought we’d share some of the ideas we’ve considered over the years (initiating study published in 1987):
- 𝐍𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Due to the decreasing depth of the canal, any activity (not just motorboats, but paddle boats, kayaks & other floatables) can stir up the floor of the canal (especially in the late summer!) causing significant releases of vegetation decay which eventually infiltrate Lower Twin Lake making 𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 an irresponsible sidestep as benefactors of our lake.
- 𝐌𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬: This requisite churning up of sediment would cause excessive amounts of vegetative decay to be released into the water column.
- 𝐏𝐮𝐦𝐩 & 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞: Given the large volume of water in need of treatment & the precarious nature of the process/location in this scope of work, the use of tanker trucks could not be secured. The inaccessibility of a proximal sandpit with sufficient water absorbability, given the volume of sediment & water, could negatively affect nearby lands. *𝑔𝑜𝑜𝒹 𝓃𝑒𝒾𝑔𝒽𝒷𝑜𝓇𝓈 𝒹𝑜𝓃’𝓉 𝓂𝑜𝓋𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝑒𝒾𝓇 𝓅𝓇𝑜𝒷𝓁𝑒𝓂𝓈 𝑜𝓃𝓉𝑜 𝓉𝒽𝑒𝒾𝓇 𝓃𝑒𝒾𝑔𝒽𝒷𝑜𝓇𝓈.*
- 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠: Pumping sediment & water into dewatering bags with daily inspections monitoring methods & procedures. Once the de-watering of the bags is complete, the sediment will be hauled away, making 𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥.

A quick explanation of what is happening in our channel/canal area between Upper & Lower Twin Lakes, and 𝙬̳𝙝̳𝙮̳ 𝙬̳𝙚̳ 𝙖̳𝙧̳𝙚̳ 𝙨̳𝙤̳ 𝙘̳𝙤̳𝙣̳𝙘̳𝙚̳𝙧̳𝙣̳𝙚̳𝙙̳:
Naturally, water flows from Upper Twin (West) to Lower Twin (East) Lake by way of a channel & canal area. The channel area is approx. 2000' from one end to the other. There is an abundance of very soft sediment in the canal that is continually flowing into Lower Twin. This sediment is high in organic content. In the shallow areas of the canal there is appreciable current, capable of moving a significant amount of sediment & various nutrients as the water flows. This sediment is easily disturbed &, as it's constantly being redistributed, these materials decay & form surface sediment, which is slowly killing Lower Twin Lake. As water levels decrease & watercrafts traverse through the area, this situation is amplified. By dredging the channel/canal (taking out the sediment & deepening the canal) we would be limiting the sediment available to be kicked up & redistributed. Dredging will aid in maintaining a clear path in the canal/channel, allowing water & nature enthusiasts to continue to enjoy the beauty & opportunities presented in the canal & Lower Twin. Our Phase II Canal Twin Lakes Inc organization (as well as Twin Lakes Improvement Association [TLIA]) has worked hard to find the safest & most feasible way to dredge the canal. If our dredging project is approved by the state, then we are looking at a cost of over $130,000 to complete this crucial project.
