Big project on the books! Over the last two days volunteers from South Dakota Wildlife Federation, interns from South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, board members from dakota bowhunters association, and board members from South Dakota Antelope Foundation completed 2.5 miles of woven wire removal from the Hereford area. This landowner will replace the woven wire with wildlife friendly fencing. The landowner is making their mark as a true steward of the land. Huge thank you to everyone that showed up over the last two days. Visit our website to see how you can volunteer to put more pronghorn antelope back in the SD landscape.

The SD Antelope Foundation will be conducting a fence removal project in Meade County May 31st. There is roughly 3 miles of fence to remove. The area of the project winters hundreds of pronghorn annually. These pronghorn need to be able roam free of woven wire and 5 strand barbed wire. The landowner will be replacing the fencing with wildlife friendly fencing. More specific details will be coming soon. If you’d like to volunteer email us at [email protected]

The plight of the pronghorn in this film is why several of us started the South Dakota Antelope Foundation. Fencing removal is one of the greatest key factors in recovering our fragile pronghorn population. Please watch this film!! Also please go checkout the Wyoming Migration Initiative page to see how you can help their efforts!

Maybe some of you have seen some of this popping up across SD? What is it?? It’s wildlife friendly smooth wire. Installed correctly at 18” above the ground, it allows wildlife to go under the wire without getting caught or tore up in barbed wire. Over the next decade the goal should be to have 100’s of miles of it installed across SD. Currently South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks has programs for ranchers and farmers to replace barbed wire with smooth wire. The program allows for new fencing that benefits the landowner and wildlife. It’s a glimpse into effective stewardship, conservation, and improving the human footprint.

The more miles of woven wire we as hunters and non hunters can roll up will result in a greater future for big game in pronghorn country!

One of our followers submitted this thermal video that shows coyotes running a small group of Pronghorn. Coyotes just being coyotes. The reality though is that coyotes over contribute to the overall mortality of Pronghorn. More on that later.

Back in August this pronghorn fawn was found deceased in an open pasture with the doe nearby. This would indicate the fawn had just recently succumbed to an unknown illness. South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks and regional universities are always working hard to understand the causes behind pronghorn mortality. Sometimes we’ll just never know. When you encounter a fresh mortality that is non hunting or non motor vehicle related it is beneficial to contact your local conservation officer to report the location.

One of our followers sent in this video of a young buck with his horns hung up in fencing. The buck was eventually able to free itself but the video also shows the challenges of the human footprint for Pronghorn Antelope. Fencing is 100% needed for ranching and farming with no question. Can bottom wires be raised 18” from the ground? Yes. Can smooth wire be installed? Yes. Can we as hunters and non hunters help with these projects? YES!!!! Thanks Zach for the video!!
