PRIA has released a new paper explaining Notary Basics. Notaries public provide an essential function to the land records industry. Most documents are required by statute to be notarized in order to be accepted for recording. The practice of using a trusted third party to certify that certain formalities of document ex*****on have taken place between individuals dates to early civilization and has carried forward to modern times.

Discussed in this paper are the assurances that the notarial act includes, the essential elements of the notarial act, the value of notarization, and some of the misconceptions associated with notarization.

This paper was developed by the eNotarization Work Group, co-chaired by Amber Bourgie, Hennepin Co., MN, and Marc Aronson, Pennsylvania Association of Notaries.

Originally adopted in 2020 and freshly reviewed this May, PRIA's Social Security Numbers guide breaks down the structure of the SSN, how it's been used (and misused) as a stand-in identifier across credit, health, and government systems, and the legal protections in place — including the Social Security Number Fraud Prevention Act of 2017.
