The words we choose can shape how people feel seen, respected, and included.

Using respectful Down Syndrome language helps us focus on the person, not just a diagnosis. Choosing phrases like “a child with Down syndrome” and “has Down syndrome” can support more thoughtful communication in classrooms, families, and communities.

Most importantly, listen to how each person describes themselves and respect their preferences.

Inclusion means more than extending an invitation. It means creating a real opportunity to participate.

Before an activity, share what to expect and ask, “What would help you join?” Give the person time to respond, listen to their needs, and respect their choices.

Whether it’s a neighborhood gathering, school activity, or community event, thoughtful planning can make participation more accessible and meaningful for people with Down Syndrome.
