On this last day of Women’s History Month, we’re honoring the incredible Betty Camp — wife of our founder, Dr. Norman Camp, and a powerful force in her own right. 💚

Betty was a steady pillar of PEJ’s early work, a quiet leader whose care, persistence, and belief in community helped shape the foundation we stand on today. Her legacy lives on in every volunteer who shows up, every neighbor we serve, and every bit of progress we make toward a more just and resilient Southeast Raleigh.

Here’s to Betty — a woman whose impact continues to ripple through the Walnut Creek watershed and beyond. 🌿✨

🌿 Brookside Creek Week Celebration — March 18

3–6pm: iNaturalist BioBlitz
6–7:30pm: Pelagic’s Happy Hour Creek Cleanup
Location: Meadowbrook Park, 1229 Norris St

It’s Raleigh’s Creek Week, and Brookside is celebrating for the first time. Join us for an afternoon of exploring the neighborhood, identifying plants and wildlife, learning about our stormwater creeks, and pitching in to keep the environment clean.

From 3–6pm, meet RaleighCREEKS and Partners for Environmental Justice to learn how to get started with our iNaturalist BioBlitz. Take photos of plants and animals you find while walking the neighborhood to contribute to Brookside’s year‑long iNaturalist project. Young explorers can make their own viewing scopes with materials provided.

At 6pm, Pelagic and The Great Raleigh Cleanup will lead a litter walk to remove trash from in and around the creek. Tools, gloves, vests, and a limited number of waders will be available.

Bundle up, come out, and help us celebrate these remarkable ecosystems right here in Brookside.

On this last day of Black History Month, we honor Dr. Norman Camp — the founder of Partners for Environmental Justice.
His vision, leadership, and deep commitment to community empowerment laid the foundation for everything we continue to do today. Because of him, Southeast Raleigh has a stronger voice, a healthier environment, and a legacy grounded in education, stewardship, and justice.

Thank you, Dr. Camp, for your unwavering dedication and for showing what true community‑led change looks like. 💚✨

Huge gratitude to our incredible GSI Warriors! 💚🌿 Last week, volunteers rolled up their sleeves and removed TONS of invasive species — including Chinese privet, autumn olive, thorny olive, white mulberry, and English ivy — helping restore healthier habitat along our streams.

A special shoutout to those who completed training to safely apply a glyphosate‑based herbicide to treat stumps after cutting. This extra step helps ensure these invasives don’t grow back and allows our native plants a chance to thrive. The treatment is applied carefully and in very small amounts and will not negatively impact water quality or the macroinvertebrates living in the creek. 🌱💪

Next up: our March GSI service project!
📅 March 19th
🕐 1–4 PM
📍 MLK Memorial Gardens
To register visit: www.pejraleighnc.org/volunteer (scroll to the last slide for QR code)

We’ll be doing live staking to support stream restoration — an awesome hands‑on chance to help stabilize banks, improve water quality, and strengthen the Walnut Creek watershed.

We’d love to see you there! 💚
