🌱 Become a GSI Warrior! 🌱

Join Partners for Environmental Justice and the City of Raleigh's Parks Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Crew for a hands-on volunteer service project at John Chavis Memorial Park on October 22 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Help plant native species in existing GSI features that manage stormwater, improve water quality, and create habitat for pollinators and wildlife. If time allows, volunteers will also assist with removing invasive plants that threaten the health of these important community spaces.

Come learn how rain gardens, bioretention areas, and other nature-based solutions reduce flooding, support healthy ecosystems, and build more resilient communities. Plus, meet neighbors, connect with City staff, and make a lasting impact in the Walnut Creek watershed.

Join Partners for Environmental Justice and Crosslink Community Garden on November 2 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM for Harvest to Home, a hands-on fall cooking demonstration that brings fresh ingredients from the garden straight to the table.

Learn how to prepare a healthy, family-friendly meal that you can easily recreate and remix at home while exploring the connections between food, water, and our environment. Together, we'll share practical tips for reducing food waste, protecting water quality, and building healthier communities through sustainable choices.

🌿 A big thank you to everyone who joined Partners for Environmental Justice and the City of Raleigh’s GSI Maintenance Crew at John Chavis Memorial Park on September 17!

Volunteers helped prepare a Green Stormwater Infrastructure site for a future native pollinator garden by removing plants that were not supporting pollinator habitat or highlighting the purpose of the GSI feature. Along the way, participants learned how native plants and nature-based stormwater solutions help improve water quality, reduce flooding, and create healthier, more resilient communities.

We’re excited to see this space transformed into a vibrant habitat for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators while showcasing the power of green infrastructure in the Walnut Creek watershed. 🐝🦋💚

New Location Unlocked! 🔓😉

Looking for a meaningful way to spend your Thursday morning? Join Partners for Environmental Justice and the City of Raleigh's Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Crew for a hands-on volunteer service project at John Chavis Memorial Park.

We'll be preparing GSI planting beds for future native plantings through weeding, mulching, and site preparation while learning how green infrastructure helps improve water quality, reduce flooding, support wildlife habitat, and create healthier communities.

🌱 600 Plants, One Greener Raleigh! 🌱

What a great day in the greenhouse! Together, we transplanted 600 plugs of four different native sedges and grasses into individual pots, preparing them for their next stage of growth. These plants will eventually be installed in a green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) project during a future GSI Warrior Day, where they’ll help absorb and filter stormwater, reduce flooding, and improve water quality.
Beyond the hands-on work, volunteers learned how native plants play a critical role in green infrastructure and how these nature-based solutions create healthier, more resilient communities.

Thank you to everyone who got their hands dirty and helped prepare these future stormwater champions! 💚🌿

🎥🌱 In December 2025, Partners for Environmental Justice, in collaboration with the City of Raleigh Innovation Team (i-Team), hosted the Community Project Expo.

The Expo gave graduates of the Walnut Creek Watershed Learning Network (WCWLN) the opportunity to showcase community projects developed through the program. Three participants pitched their projects to a panel of professionals and received $1,000 in seed funding to help bring their ideas to life, while poster presenters shared emerging projects with the community.

Thank you to our panelists for sharing their expertise, to Quizine Orleans / Cafe Orleans Raleigh for the amazing food, and to everyone who came out to support these inspiring community leaders.

🌞 Registration is OPEN for the Fall 2026 Walnut Creek Watershed Learning Network: Heat Island Learning Team Cohort

This season’s theme — Urban Heat Islands — dives into how extreme heat shapes daily life in our neighborhoods and what we can do to build cooler, healthier, more resilient communities.

Participants who complete the program receive a $400 stipend.

-Understand how heat impacts our watershed and our health
-Explore neighborhood heat patterns and local climate data
-Learn community‑driven cooling solutions like trees, shade, and green infrastructure
-Design and complete a project that supports climate resilience
-Build leadership skills to advocate for environmental justice
