Racine Concert Band

Racine Concert Band Mark Eichner, Director Our roots date back to 1877 when Adolph Schulte and his brothers provided "music in the park" for Racine area residents.

In 1923, brother Henry Schulte approached the Racine City Council and succeeded in getting an annual appropriation of funds to organize a "city band" and officially entertain the Racine citizenry. The name of that first ensemble, the Racine Park Board Band. For 44 years the Park Board Band served its community well, providing over 300 programs of fine concert band music. In 1967, the late conducto

r, John Opferkuch, presided over a name change to the Racine Municipal Band. Affectionately known as the "muni band", the Municipal Band expanded the tradition of concerts in the park as well as establishing a year 'round series of concerts. More recently however (1996), to better define our role in the community and to more accurately describe the type of music our audiences are demanding, we changed our name to the Racine Concert Band.

Congratulations goes out to our fearless Music Director, Mark Eichner. Here is what the Racine Arts Council had to say:

We are proud to announce that the RAC Board has unanimously selected Mark Eichner as the 2026 recipient of the Heart of the Arts Award.

Since 2002, Mark’s dedication and leadership as Music Director and Conductor have guided the Racine Concert Band with distinction. Remarkably, in RCB’s 102-year history dating back to 1923, Mark is only the fifth conductor to hold this role. During his tenure, RCB has continued its proud tradition of accessibility and excellence, presenting more than 1,500 free concerts to the community while maintaining a full and active performance schedule.

Beyond RCB, Mark’s influence on local music education and arts programming spans decades, including more than 30 years as band conductor at UW–Parkside, founding the UW–Parkside Community Band, leadership with the WSMA State Solo & Ensemble Contest, and involvement with the Summer Arts & Crafts Festival. His outreach work with RCB in local high schools—including the current Commissioning Project—addresses an important need for music education and mentorship for students in our community.

Thank you Mark for everything you do for us and the city of Racine. Looking forward to celebrating you at the art seed gala.
