How cool is this! Visit Illinois Assistive Technology Program - IATP or check in with us about how you can stay independent and adapt to whatever you might be facing!

Jan recently visited the IATP Demonstration Center to get ideas about what was available for people with Parkinson’s. She wanted ways she could stay up to date with friends and family via email and social media. Staff was able to show Jan a joystick and a large-print keyboard that would allow her to easily navigate her computer. Jan could use these to stay connected through ergonomic, supportive cursor movement and an accessible keyboard with both large and bold keys for easier fine-motor typing control.

From Jan: “My world opened up all over again. So much is available and I can remain independent. All of the staff I worked with was so helpful and everyone went out of their way to listen and understand.”

Take note! Tracking services & information received at medical appointments, and then comparing your notes to your benefits statements, can be very helpful in detecting errors or fraud.

What a great tip! If you are in a similar situation and living out of state, decisions with a time line can become impossible!

One tip if you are handling a parent's home from out of state.

Before you fly in, walk the house on a video call with whoever is going to be on the ground.

Most families fly back, stand in the kitchen, and try to make every decision in the room with grief sitting on top of them. The pile grows. The trip stretches from three days to seven. The next trip gets scheduled.

A video walk-through changes that. You mark what is sentimental. You mark what gets donated. You mark what gets sold. You mark what gets hauled. Every item gets a category the first time you look at it.

Then somebody else can run the sort while you are still at your kitchen table in Atlanta or Phoenix or wherever you are.

That is the first thing we do with families who reach us from out of state. We did it last month for three siblings, none of them in Illinois, and we never had to ask them to fly back.

If you are about to plan that first trip, do the walk-through first. Make every decision once.
