Chapter History - Gadsden County, Florida

Our National Founder, Dr. Arnita Young Boswell and 13 other spirited women founded the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. in 1974 during the Fourth Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Weekend. These spirited Black women met in a hotel and organized a national forum to articulate the needs and concerns of Black women and children. Historically, NHBW, Inc.’s agenda has been to impact public policy and legislation for the betterment of the minority community in general and the economic and political status of Women.

Through our mission we support and sponsor community-based health and human services initiatives, present and preserve the achievements of African-American women and their significant contribution to society, promote and sponsor projects that improve and enrich lives through the arts and cultural currents of the community as well as education, prepare women and girls for community service and leadership and advocate for the well-being of women and their families.

The NHBW, Inc. – Gadsden Chapter was established and chartered in 1995 under the leadership of Dr. Jessie V. Furlow. The charted officers and members of the NHBW, Inc. – Gadsden Chapter are: Dr. Jessie V. Furlow (President), Alice Dupont (1st Vice President); Sharon Elias (Secretary), Sarah Figgers (Treasurer), Gwen P. Robinson (Historian); Mary Davis, Catherine James, Vivian Kelly, Dr. Alma Littles, Dr. Cyneetha Strong-Smith, Willie Ruth Williams. These spirited women saw the need to embrace the ideals of the national initiatives on the local level. The NHBW, Inc. – Gadsden Chapter carries out the national mission locally by promoting and supporting programs focused on improving the lives of women and families in the Gadsden County communities.
