Common Ground: A Community for People of Color

Common Ground: A Community for People of Color Connection. Conversation. Community. A welcoming space for POC individuals in Quincy.

Common Ground stands in solidarity with our Islamic neighbors and the Muslim community in Quincy and around the world. In the face of hatred and fear, we affirm the dignity and belonging of every person. Our community is stronger when we stand beside one another. We see you. We stand with you. You belong here. ❤️

I've been quiet for a little while.

Truthfully, I've been wondering if I'm trying to do too much. Sometimes I wonder if I'm talking into a void.

Starting something like Common Ground has felt exciting...and a little lonely. I know there are people in our community with stories to tell, friendships to build, and spaces they're longing for. Finding each other takes time, I know.

So I'm not giving up. I'm just being honest about where I am today.

If you've been following quietly, I'd love to hear from you. What kind of community are you hoping for? What would make you feel like you belong in Quincy?

Maybe that's where the conversation starts.

Do you feel connected? Are you looking for a community where you can simply be who you are? We can make something happen...

What do *you* think? I am part white myself, but I have never felt like "white" was something I connected to. I strongly feel a tie to my Danish heritage (my mom was from Denmark), and I've always felt a pull to my Scots-Irish roots, but the term "white" never meant anything to me. If you are multiracial, do you feel a connection to "white"? Or to your cultural heritage?

And so it begins. I'm beginning to have [white] people call this page racist and "obscene."

*sigh*

Why is Common Ground for POC?

The goal isn't to divide our community. It's to create a space where people of color in the Quincy area can connect, build friendships, and share experiences that are sometimes hard to find in a region where we're a small minority.

Creating a space for ourselves doesn't diminish anyone else. It just meets a need that already exists.

I often hear people say they "don't see color."I think most people genuinely feel like they're expressing equality when they say that. Guess what? POC experience that phrase differently.

For many of us, it feels like we're supposed to ignore an important part of who we are.

Our cultures, histories, families, languages, and lived experiences MATTER. They shape how we move through the world. Pretending those differences don't exist doesn't erase inequality or make people feel seen. It can actually make it harder to talk honestly about our experiences.

That's one of the reasons I started Common Ground.
This isn't a space because POC are "better" or because we want to exclude anyone. It's because everyone deserves spaces where they can breathe, tell their stories, celebrate their cultures, and build genuine friendships with people who share some of those lived experiences.

Seeing color is not the opposite of equality. Seeing one another fully—with respect—is equality in action.

I know I can't be the only one.

I moved to Quincy three years ago, and while it's been a big change for me, I've really grown to love it here.

I was raised in a uniquely tri-racial community in North Carolina. I'm Lumbee, and where I grew up, Lumbee people, Black folks, and white folks make up almost equal parts of the community. The Latino population has been growing there for generations, too. Being surrounded by that kind of diversity shaped me.

Being away from my people has been harder than I expected.

I go to church, and I'm almost always the only person of color there. Sometimes I wonder: are there others out here in Quincy feeling the same way? Looking around and wondering where everyone is?

Where are the places where we can just...hang out? Laugh together. Share food. Let our kids play. Enjoy being who we are without feeling like we have to code-switch or explain ourselves.

That's why I created this page.

I want to help create spaces where people of color in the Quincy area can connect in real life. Coffee meetups. Bowling nights. Cookouts. Family gatherings. Simple moments of community where we can show up as ourselves.

Do you want that, too?

Not more content on a screen—but real conversations. Real friendships. Real community.

I know I can't be the only one. I see y'all at Walmart on a Saturday. 😊 I know you're out there.

Let's find each other. ❤️

Things slowed way down this week since I had surgery, but I plan to get back to it next week! I hope everyone has been having a great week! Feel free to drop a DM if you have questions about the page. ❤️

🌿 Common Ground Question of the Week

Who is a person who shaped your life, and what did they teach you?

It could be a parent, grandparent, teacher, friend, neighbor, mentor, or someone you only knew for a short time.

Sometimes the people who change us most aren't famous or "extraordinary"—they simply show us how to be brave, kind, resilient, or ourselves.

I'd love to hear your story. My answer in the comments. 💛

It could be something tangible—I’d love to see public splash pads for the kids! ☀️💦Or maybe it's something less tangible...

It could be something tangible—I’d love to see public splash pads for the kids! ☀️💦

Or maybe it's something less tangible: more neighbors gathering around tables together, more opportunities to make friends, more spaces where people feel like they belong.

What about you? What would you love to see more of?
