Feet for Brains

Feet for Brains FEET FOR BRAINS is a FEAT FOR BRAINS! Patrick Toon is running to support Cure Alzheimer's Foundation There is currently no cure. Moral support means a lot, too.

In 2018, my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, which causes ongoing and increasing dementia. I'm running to try and change that and with your help, we can make a difference. For every dollar you donate to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund/Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation, I'll run one mile. The goal is to raise $2,000 and run 2000 milles by April 17th, 2023 when I run the Boston Maratho

n. When I run the miles you sponsored, you'll get a shoutout here on the Feet for Brains page as well as on the Feet for Brains Instagram (). Even if you can't donate, I invite you to follow our journey here on social media. For more information about me, my Dad, and the Cure Alzheimer's Fund, please visit our gofundme page: https://www.gofundme.com/f/feet-for-brains

I'll see you at the finish line! Patrick

Miles 5459-5465 came from an Anonymous donor! Ninety, friends. That was the temperature today when I stepped off the train in Forest Hills. And with a pork bun percolating in my belly, at roughly the same temperature, this run did not have an auspicious beginning. But eventually, I shook off the heat and the upset stomach and enjoyed a fast circuit around the trails of Forest Park, which was nearly deserted. I don't know if the heat kept folks away or if they just don't go there in the afternoon, but it augurs well for the coming weeks now that I won't be running as much in Central Park. When I looked at my watch at the end, it turns out I PRed this route today. That's an auspicious way to finish a week! Thanks, Anonymous!

KJ Sanchez was the generous sponsor of miles 5452-5459! I was back in the park on Thursday to do this funky seven-mile route. It gets a little confusing up in the North Woods with so many parallel paths and dirt trails branching in different directions. Despite a few closures due to tree maintenance, I think I managed to get it right, I'd hate to short as generous a donor as KJ even the smallest distance. As you can see by the picture, the Central Park Lake is beginning to take on its summer guise with an unnatural shade of green. This was another warm one and I was turning a similar color by the end of the run. Nevertheless, we're seven miles closer to the finish line, thanks to KJ! And all of you! Thank you all for supporting Alzheimer's research!

Miles 5444-5452 were sponsored by the Cast and Crew of Waverly Gallery At the Shaker Bridge Theatre! The show might be over, but the gratitude keeps on going! We banged out a few miles on Wednesday, friends, with an eight-mile trip up to Morningside Park and back. There was not a cloud in the sky. A little cover would have been appreciated as summer is beginning to turn up the heat this week. The older I get, the more my tolerance for heat seems to erode and I wilt exponentially as the temps get higher. So I'll enjoy the fast runs while I can, like this one! Thank you so much for the run, Shaker Bridge folks!

Teague Webb sponsored miles 5424-5444! There's a lot to see in Queens, and yesterday's run was a broad survey of environments, which Teague would have greatly enjoyed (more detail in the captions). It's been well over a year since I've run twenty miles and I wasn't expecting to do so yesterday but set up for the Governor's Ball (a music festival, not a political soiree) had sections of Flushing Meadows park closed off. Finding my way across the park added an unexpected extra mile but that aside, there was no fault to find in yesterday's run. There were forests, streets, parks, lakes, hills, and even poison ivy. Dance teams, fitness groups, fishermen, and birdwatchers. The south loop of Cunningham Park was new ground and who wouldn't love running along a highway named after a guy named Horace? Thanks for the miles, Teague! And for the ongoing support!

An Anonymous donor sponsored miles 5418-5424! And stupid me, I forgot to bring along my Flipbelt (the item I wear to store my phone) for this one. You'll just have to trust me that it happened. There wasn't much on this run that you all haven't seen before: it was another lap around Central Park. The weather was gorgeous, the park busy once again. The NYRR Runcenter is closing their locker area as they do some remodeling, so these pics are a last look at the place prior to the overhaul. I'll have to adjust my running schedule. Perhaps I'll run to work or head out to Forest Park more often. Change is good. So are the miles. Thanks, Anonymous!

Miles 5412-5418 were generously sponsored by Celeste Ciulla, newly back in town after her star turn at The Shaker Bridge Theatre in New Hampshire. Yesterday's route was one Celeste is plenty familiar with, a lap around Central Park, which she and I have run many times together. Heading down the west side, I remembered a particular run that featured a surprise encounter with a pair of rats followed closely by a spontaneous piggy-back ride. In fact, I think about that moment every time I pass that spot! No rats or piggy-backing yesterday, but there were lots of people. Weather was ideal and the park was teeming. Thanks for the miles and memories, Celeste!

KJ Sanchez brought us into a new century by sponsoring miles 5399-5412! There was a lot of rain over the weekend, but Monday afternoon abruptly turned into the nicest spring day you could wish for. I headed back to Forest Park for this thirteen-miler thinking that, over the past few weeks, the trails and I had become friends. Evidently not, as the hills and drops thoroughly kicked my butt. The park sent me packing with more ache and soreness than I've felt in a long time. It's not often I feel entitled to a rest day, but today I'm resting with a capital R. Thanks for putting us this much farther down the road, KJ! And also for supporting Alzheimer's research!

Miles 5392-5399 were sponsored by an Anonymous donor! I brought back the seven-mile route for today and wound around the footpaths of the North Woods. The sculpted stone face in the picture was a remarkable discovery. No one knows when it was sculpted or by whom. It's some feat because that type of stone, Manhattan schist, is incredibly dense. I've known its approximate location for some time and always hoped I'd someday come across it on my rambles. This is a footpath I've run many times, but always in the same direction. Today, I changed things around and ran the opposite way. As I was heading along, it stopped me in my tracks. Turns out, I've been running past it for years! Thanks for the discovery, Anonymous! And for supporting Alzheimer's research!

Miles 5386-5392 were sponsored by Cast and Crew of The Waverly Gallery at the Shaker Bridge Theatre! While Forest Park isn't the wilds of New Hampshire, it gets the job done in a pinch. Chancy weather kept most folks indoors this morning, but not me! That meant I had the trails (and puddles) all to myself and I'm never sad about that. I used the peace and quiet to work on lines for my own upcoming project...more on that later. The rain started falling just as I was wrapping this one up, which meant I couldn't stop to bang on the piano. The Qi Gong ladies (who were still going strong in the drizzle) are probably grateful. Thanks, Shaker Bridge folks, for a perfect start to my day! And for supporting Alzheimer's research!

Miles 5380-5386 came from an Anonymous donor! What a morning! Hot, yes, but despite the sweat, I had some encounters that reminded me why I love living in New York. It started with a chance encounter with a piano in the middle of the path. And heck yeah, I sat down and played for a while! Out on the trail, a Guyanese man called me "his brother" and I was wished a pleasant day by a Sikh gentleman moments before passing a group of Chinese ladies moving in quiet unison as they worked through their Qi Gong routine. Once in a while, New York City will give you a hug. Thanks, Anonymous! I needed this one!
