What Are “Scaredy Cat Dogs?
A Special Group of Dogs Who Deserve a Special Kind of Person
At Central Arizona Animal Rescue, we care for all kinds of dogs—but some of the ones who need us most are what we lovingly call our scaredy cat dogs. This nickname doesn’t mean they’re bad, broken, or hopeless. It simply means they grew up without the human contact and guidance puppies need, so trusting people doesn’t come naturally to them. These dogs weren’t raised in homes, they weren’t taught that people can be kind, and they didn’t learn basic puppy skills like leash walking or meeting new humans confidently.
Because of that, they’re cautious. They’re unsure. And they need someone willing to look past their fear and see the wonderful dog underneath.
Why They’re Special
Every scaredy cat dog at our rescue has been with us for a long time. Over time, they’ve learned to trust a small handful of staff members—people they see every day, who bring them treats (hot dogs are a BIG hit), speak gently, and show them patience. Once these dogs bond with someone, that bond is deep, loyal, and incredibly meaningful. They just need the chance to build that same trust with a forever family.
What They Need
Because they missed out on early training, most of these dogs have never learned how to walk on a leash. They’ll need patience, consistency, and a calm environment while they learn. The good news is: we have trainers here at the rescue who will teach YOU how to teach THEM, so you’re never doing this alone.
We do recommend that these dogs not go to homes with very small children—fast movements and unpredictable noise can be overwhelming for dogs who are already unsure of people.
Why You Haven’t Seen Them at Adoption Events
Our scaredy cat dogs don’t attend adoption events. They’re simply too frightened in busy, unfamiliar environments. That means they don’t get the same exposure as our more confident dogs, and very few people ever get the chance to meet them. When visitors do come to see them, they often don’t “present” well—they hide, they freeze, or they avoid eye contact. But that’s just fear talking, not their true personality.
Great With Other Dogs
One thing these pups are confident about is other dogs. They’re almost always wonderful with canine companions, and we strongly recommend they go to a home with another friendly dog. A confident dog can show them the ropes, help them feel safe, and teach them that people aren’t so scary after all. They make excellent buddies for lonely dogs who need a companion.

To help set these dogs—and you—up for success, we offer a very reduced adoption rate for our scaredy cat dogs. We also send you home with everything you need to start this journey:

• A crate
• Dog bowls
• Leash & collar
• A cozy dog bed
You’ll also receive guidance from our trainers and ongoing support from our rescue team.

Hi, My Name Is Dusty, and I'm Looking for My Forever Family
Hello there! My name is Dusty, and I'm a little Chihuahua mix with a big heart and an even bigger hope that my forever family is reading this right now.
My story didn't start out the way every puppy deserves. I came to Central Arizona Animal Rescue along with my five sisters after being surrendered from a difficult situation. We weren't the only puppies there. We were told another litter of six puppies had already been given away at a gas station without vaccinations, microchips, spay or neuter surgeries, or any of the things that help keep dogs healthy and safe. There are reportedly even more older dogs still living in the home who haven't been fixed either. The humans at the rescue say this is what happens when animals don't receive proper medical care and responsible ownership. They were also told the owner has struggled with drug abuse, which made it even harder for all the dogs in the home to get the care they needed.
But enough about my past. I'd rather tell you about who I am today.
I'm a happy little guy who loves people, especially kids! I was raised around children and think they're pretty wonderful. Whether it's playing in the yard, snuggling on the couch, or following them around to see what adventure comes next, I'm always happy to be part of the fun.
I also have a special soft spot for adult women. They make me feel safe and comfortable. Adult men? Well, I'm still working on that. I don't dislike them at all, but sometimes I can be a little suspicious when I first meet one. Can you blame me? My early life didn't always show me that every human could be trusted. The good news is that I'm learning every day, and with patience, kindness, and a few treats, I warm up nicely.
The wonderful people at Central Arizona Animal Rescue have worked hard to give me a fresh start. I've been neutered, so I won't be contributing to the cycle of unwanted litters. I've also been vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. For the first time in my life, I'm getting the care every dog deserves.
My sisters are safe too. The rescue is working to get all five of them spayed as soon as time becomes available with their very busy veterinarian. The rescue is doing everything it can, but resources and space are limited.
That's why finding homes for dogs like me is so important.
When you adopt me, you're not just changing my life. You're helping create room for the rescue to save more dogs from situations like the one I came from. Every kennel that opens up gives another dog a chance at safety, medical care, and a better future. The rescue hopes to help as many animals as possible before the situation grows even larger and even more dogs are left without proper care.
