Preston’s Law is working. But the numbers should make all of us stop and pay attention.
Named after Preston Lord, the Queen Creek teen who lost his life in a brutal group assault in 2023, Preston’s Law was created to hold people accountable when multiple individuals attack a single victim.
According to Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell, since the law took effect, 63 people have already been charged under Preston’s Law, and more than half are juveniles.
On one hand, that’s exactly why the law was needed. Violent group attacks should have consequences, and victims deserve justice.
But on the other hand, 63 people charged is a number that should concern every parent, teacher, coach, mentor, and community member.
These aren’t just statistics. These are our kids.
I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but I know this: we can’t arrest our way out of a problem that starts long before a police report is written.
We need parents who are involved. We need mentors. We need coaches, teachers, neighbors, grandparents, church leaders, and trusted adults willing to show up for kids who may not have someone showing up for them.
Know your kids’ friends. Open your home. Check in on the quiet kid. Encourage the struggling kid. Be the safe adult a child can call when they need help.
The legacy of Preston Lord shouldn’t just be a law that increases penalties. It should also be a reminder that every child matters and that communities are strongest when we look out for one another.
Accountability matters.
But so does prevention.
Let’s continue building a community where our kids know they are seen, supported, valued, and loved before they ever find themselves heading down the wrong path.
