Parents…One of the easiest hacks to keep Scouting from feeling overwhelming, and it doubles as a motivator for your Scout is to create a family calendar.
🎯 Purpose:
• Keep parents and Scouts on the same page about upcoming deadlines.
• Track progress toward ranks, merit badges, and boards of review.
• Reduce last-minute scrambling (uniforms, camp gear, sign-offs).
• Make accomplishments visible + motivating.
Here’s how it could be set up and what it might look like:
⸻
🛠️ Tools You Can Use:
• Google Calendar: sharable with reminders, color-coded events.
• Dry-Erase Wall Calendar: month-at-a-glance in the kitchen.
• Printable Monthly Planner: paper version with icons/stickers.
• Combination: some families use a wall calendar + Google reminders.
⸻
📅 Example Setup (Color-Coded):
Categories & Colors:
🔵 Campouts / Outings
🟢 Boards of Review / Courts of Honor
🟡 Merit Badge Classes / Deadlines
🔴 Fundraisers / Service Projects
🟣 Advancement Deadlines (Eagle apps, MB blue card deadlines)
⸻
👀Visually:
• Google Calendar: each category is its own color, with 2-day reminders (“Pack check for campout,” “Uniform ready for BOR”).
• Dry-Erase Calendar: use colored markers + stickers (🏕️ tent for campouts, 🎓 cap for Boards of Review, 🛡️ badge icon for MB deadlines).
• Printable Tracker: attach a badge progress chart on the side (“In Progress: Swimming MB, Citizenship MB. Completed: First Aid MB”).
⸻
🔑 Pro Tips
• Add recurring reminders: “Troop meeting – every Wednesday @ 7pm.”
• Post in kitchen or family command center: visible to both Scout & parent.
• Give your Scout ownership: let him mark off completed merit badge requirements or add his own reminders.
• Celebrate progress: when a badge is finished, put a ✅ sticker on that day.
