Interested in learning more about Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage? The National Archives has a wealth of material available online about the history and contributions those with AANHPI heritage have made to the United States. Below is a form filled out for martial artist Bruce Lee when he traveled overseas as an infant. He needed this paperwork to ensure he could return to the United States. Despite having been born in San Francisco, Lee and other Chinese Americans had to get special documents proving their legal status, unlike Americans of European descent. On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court issued its ruling in the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education case, rejecting the “separate but equal” doctrine that allowed school segregation. Workers on strike for an eight-hour workday were rallying on May 4, 1886, when an unknown person threw a bomb at police. Seven officers and at least four civilians were killed in the bombing and police gunfire. Dozens were wounded.
