One minute Ethan was training for an Ironman.

Then a wave in San Diego changed everything.

Cervical spinal cord injury.

Rehab. Surgeries. Life in a wheelchair.

Now he’s training for something different.

Independence.

I’ve followed Ethan’s journey for a while.

One of his shirts says:

This young man has the heart of a lion.

PROFILE IN RESILIENCE — BRETT COLONELL

2K is for Brett.

Brett sustained a C4/C5 spinal cord injury in 1997, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.

After Craig Hospital, he finished his Mechanical Engineering degree at CU Boulder and later earned his MBA.

Then he found another way to create.

For the last 10 years, Brett has painted with a brush secured to a custom mouth stick.

Ink. Watercolor. Gouache. Oil.

His work is incredible.

So is the way he uses it to give back.

That’s resilience.

On 9/5, the 2K belongs to Brett.

PROFILE IN RESILIENCE — JEFFREY DAVID BARRY

Leading up to Break Your Neck III, we’re honoring four people who embody what this race is all about.

Four kilometers. Four Profiles in Resilience.

3K belongs to Jeffrey David Barry.

Jeff sustained a cervical spinal cord injury after being hit by a drunk driver. His two small children walked away completely uninjured.

Jeff will never walk again.

He and Kenny spent countless hours together at Craig Hospital, working through rehab side by side. His strength, attitude, and gratitude have inspired everyone around him.

In Jeff’s words:

“Resilience through tough times is always settled with gratitude. No matter our situations, life will always present something for us to be grateful for.”
