A Community Coming Together for a Veteran
When Army veteran George Montoya reached out to the local Veterans Service Office, a simple request revealed a significant challenge. Due to limited accessibility at home, George had been unable to safely leave his house since December. Everyday activities- like sitting on the front porch or enjoying a cigar outside- -had become impossible.

Veterans Service Officer Eric Moncibais contacted Laurie Collins at the Mt. Carmel Veteran Service Center to explore available resources. Laurie then partnered with Bill Edwards at the Center Toward Self-Reliance, who approved funding for the installation of a wheelchair ramp.

Although there were delays in obtaining materials and coordinating the installation, the ramp was successfully completed at the end of June.

Today, George can once again safely enter and leave his home independently. What may seem like a simple home modification has restored freedom, independence, and a better quatity of life.

This success is a great example of what can happen when organizations work together. Through the collaboration of the Pueblo Veterans Service Office, Mt. Carmel Veteran Service Center, and the Center Toward Self-Reliance, one veteran's life was meaningfully improved. It is a reminder that when a community comes together, lasting impacts can be made for those who have served.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of a truly cherished member of our team. Thad was a kind and compassionate soul whose warmth and uplifting spirit touched everyone around him. Thad had a special way of bringing light into the workplace, often through his sense of humor and genuine care for others. Thad’s impact on our team will not be forgotten. He leaves behind not only the memory of his contributions, but also the lasting impression of his character and the connections he built with those fortunate enough to know him. During this incredibly difficult time, our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family, friends and loved ones. Thad will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
