Aspen Acres Fire – Union Member Relief & Fundraiser Announcement

The Aspen Acres Fire in southern Colorado began on Monday, June 2, in the mountains near San Isabel Lake. As of this morning, the fire has grown to nearly 90,000 acres and remains only 15% contained. Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for Beulah, Rye, Colorado City, Wetmore, and parts of Pueblo, Custer, Fremont, and Huerfano counties.

Among the thousands displaced are dozens of union members across southern Colorado. Many already know their homes are lost. Those unable to stay with family are paying out‑of‑pocket for hotels, food, and daily living expenses. These costs add up quickly, especially for households already facing uncertainty.

The Southern Colorado Labor Council has been coordinating relief efforts for impacted union members since last Wednesday. Current estimates show approximately 160 union households affected among AFL‑CIO affiliates, with additional member households from NEA affiliates also receiving support.

Tickets and donations can be made by scanning the QR Code(s) provided. All proceeds will go directly toward assisting union members who have been displaced or suffered losses due to the Aspen Acres Fire.

Ticket Range: $20–$50

If You Are a Member Impacted by the Fire

Please complete the Google Form (see below) so we can ensure you receive support. Additionally, notify your PESPA Board so we can coordinate assistance and communication.

Affiliate leaders should use this form to request relief funds for members who have been displaced or lost homes due to the Aspen Acres fire. These funds are to cover out of pocket costs.

At this time in the relief effort, only monetary donations are being accepted, through American Red Cross of Colorado or United Way of Southern Colorado.

To our Pueblo County family and to our neighboring counties now facing the devastation of this fire, our hearts are with you. Our communities are under siege by an unpredictable and fast‑moving threat, and we know many of you are exhausted, frightened, and unsure of what tomorrow will bring.

In moments like these, the strength of our region has always come from how we show up for one another. Whether you’re evacuating, sheltering in place, supporting first responders, or helping loved ones get to safety, please remember that you are not facing this alone.

If any of our members need support — whether that’s resources, guidance, a place to stay, or simply someone to talk to — reach out to us. We will do everything we can to help you navigate this moment and stay connected to the assistance you need.

Stay alert to official updates, prioritize your safety, and keep your loved ones close. We will get through this by standing together, protecting one another, and refusing to let this fire define who we are.
