HOW WILL YOU BE REMEMBERED?

These past few months have been a real eye-opener for me. As most know, we moved our Survivors Resource Center from the Pueblo Mall to a new, far greater location on Club Manor Drive, near Lowes. That’s the exciting part. The not-so-exciting part was the process I went through in looking for a new home for our Center.

My search introduced me to many people in Pueblo. Some were extremely rich (not wealthy, I will explain later) and owned many Pueblo properties, most vacant and empty. When I explained our needs to them, (that we served thousands of breast cancer families by providing free merchandise to them, and that our entire operation is run by volunteers who don't make a cent) they only seemed to care about leasing their buildings.

It was very obvious that many of these locals live for the dollar. They even talked about how much money they had, but it appeared to me it was never enough for them.

Some of the people I met were holders of "old money" in Pueblo. They have spent their lives acquiring a plethora of properties and are worth multiple millions of dollars. One in particular I met, if he converted all his money into one dollar bills and stacked them on top of each other, the pile would reach seven miles high! Wow, that’s a lot of dough! His only interest in life seemed to be adding to the stack.

There is a profound passage in Ecclesiastes, where King Solomon says, "I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless.”

I wonder if that man, who is older now, knows he can’t take it with him? Sure, his kids may be set for life, but how will he be remembered?

It seems to me that many are missing the true reason we are here: To serve others, and not ourselves alone. Pueblo would be such a better place if we all committed ourselves to serving, rather than hoarding.

This is our mission at the Becky Baker Foundation. We are thankful that we found our new home, and that our landlord is one who is committed to serving others in our community.

"A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed" Proverbs 11:25

We will re-open soon, keep watching our page for updates! RB
