Volunteer From Home & Help the Cats and Kittens of Pet Refuge!

Looking for an easy way to make a difference from the comfort of your own home?

Every day, we place fresh newspaper in the bottom of every cat's cage so our cats and kittens aren't sitting on cold metal. Before the newspapers can be used, they need to be folded in a simple, specific way.

This is a relaxing, non-physical volunteer opportunity that can be done while sitting at home while watching TV, listening to music, or simply relaxing.

We'll provide the newspapers and a quick 5-minute training session at the shelter. Volunteers simply pick up a bundle of newspapers, fold them at home, and return them to us when finished.

By donating just a little of your time, you'll help us save money on staffing costs and allow our team to spend more time caring for the cats and kittens.

Have newspapers to donate?

Even if you aren't able to volunteer, we'd greatly appreciate your newspaper donations! We need large-format newspapers, with our favorites being:

Narragansett Independent (our most requested!)
Providence Journal

Please leave newspapers in neat stacks in the donation bin outside our front door at any time.

PET ADVICE:
Chocolate can be fatal to your pet. Please keep all sweets out of reach of animals.
When taking your dog on your daily walk, please think about talking to him/her instead of being on the phone. The walk is supposed to be for his pleasure and yours.
Please walk your dog on the inside of the sidewalk where he/she is better protected from traffic.

Rhode Island pet owners have a new law to help them--it is called telemedicine.
Here is some of what it does:
veterinarians who offer virtual services (online) can do so for any appointment at their discretion, even if it's the pet's first appointment;
veterinarians can prescribe medicine after virtual appointments except for controlled substances which can only be prescribed in an in-person visit;
prescriptions from virtual appointments are good for one renewal after which another virtual appointment or an in-person visit is required.
This law was passed by the Rhode Island General Assembly at its 2026 session and signed by the Governor on June 23, 2026.

On June 18, Governor Daniel McKee signed into law landmark legislation restricting the use of dangerous anticoagulant rodenticides—the blood-thinning rat poisons responsible for the injury and death of countless hawks, owls, eagles, and other wildlife. Rhode Island now becomes the second state in the nation to pass legislation of this kind. This victory represents years of advocacy, education, investment, and partnership led by the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, along with the support of people who believe that wildlife deserves protection from unnecessary threats.
Birds of prey are among the most effective natural rodent managers, a single Great Horned Owl can consume thousands of rodents each year, but just one or two poisoned rodents can be enough to seriously harm or kill these magnificent birds.
This new law establishes a commonsense, science-based approach that protects wildlife while helping communities adopt safer and more effective pest management practices.
The Audubon Society of Rhode Island had this legislation introduced in the Rhode Island General Assembly in 2024 and worked closely with legislators, veterinarians, conservation partners, and wildlife rehabilitators at the Wildlife Clinic of RI and Congress of the Birds to advance it.
VSA supported and sent testimony to the state in support of this legislation. We are grateful to Representative Rebecca Kislak, Senator Melissa Murray and the Rhode Island General Assembly and Governor McKee for signing it into law.
