Last Thursday, the young men and woman, their leaders and families of our AHG and Trail Life troops, joined by a few from Band of Brothers members spent time doing what Memorial Day is truly meant for; remembering those who gave their lives in service to this country.
Memorial Day is not about barbecues, sales, or a long weekend.
It is about honoring the fallen. The men and women who laid down their lives so others could live free.
Last Thursday we walked row by row through the cemetery looking for any sign of military service; a marker, an emblem, a faded flag, a branch of service etched into stone. When we found one, we stopped. We cleaned their headstones, cleared away dirt and time, and placed fresh flags beside their graves.
Some of these soldiers are still visited often.
Some seem long forgotten by the world.
But last Thursday, they were remembered.
Scripture says:
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
—John 15:13
As Christians, remembrance matters. Throughout the Bible, God’s people built memorials so future generations would not forget the sacrifices, faithfulness, and stories that came before them.
Last Thursday these kids learned that honor is not just something you say, it is something you do.
They learned to slow down.
To notice names.
To respect sacrifice.
To serve quietly.
And maybe most importantly, they learned that freedom has always come at a cost.
I could not be more proud of these young people and leaders who chose to spend their day serving, remembering, and honoring those whose memory is all we have left.
May we never forget them.
