Wildflower Composers (formerly the Young Women Composers Camp) aims to amplify the voices of gender-marginalized composers and work toward a more equitable future for contemporary music. We serve composers who identify as part of the gender-marginalized community, which includes cis-women, trans-women, trans-men, and those who are nonbinary or gender-nonconforming. The annual Wildflower Composers

Festival takes place at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, and is open to composers nation-wide between the ages of 13 and 19. During the two-week program, our composers engage in coursework with core instructors, workshops with performers, and private composition lessons. Each student composes a new work for the festival, which is premiered and professionally recorded at our final concert. The festival is intended for composers between the ages of 13 and 19 who have not yet started college.

Last but not least, we are excited to share VMCs alum Amy Kennedy, who has received a $5,000 grant in the music category from the Massachusetts Cultural Council Grants for Creative Individuals for her work, New Year Concerto, 2nd Movement.

About the piece, Amy says,

β€œThis work is a movement from the complete concerto - the New Year Concerto No 1 for Strings. I actually started the themes of the first movement several years ago, and last year decided to put them all together during a cold January. The part submitted for the Mass Cultural Council Grant is 5 minutes of the second movement, an adagio that I used skills developed in the two Film Scoring Virtual Mini-Courses to create lyrical, flowing themes in contrast to the other two movements of the piece.” 🌼

We’re also excited to share Festival alum Andy Regli , as the second in our April feature series.

Andy’s master thesis β€œAcoustics & Composition” explores the main question of β€œif and how acoustic data can be used to inform a choral composition and how vocal timbre may affect the perception of resonances used”.

A little more about Andy’s work:
Measurements were taken of two different church sanctuaries and a three minute piece was created for each space and recorded ambisonically. The anonymous survey results showed a varied response in regards to the perceived resonance of individual notes and chords. Overall this research showed one method of informing choral composition with acoustic measurements along with the architecture and history of the space. However the result is from one person’s perspective and can not be expected to accurately portray the space to every person who experiences it. 🌺

We’re excited to share the first alum in our April feature series - Festival alum Hannah Wolkowitz .

Hannah recently had the second performance of the piece she wrote for Bergamot at last year’s Festival!

About the piece, Hannah says,

β€œInspired by the infectious joy of klezmer music, Unleashed invites listeners to cast off their worries and embrace happiness. The piece opens with a lively, dance-like section full of klezmer energy. A contrasting middle section introduces tension, reflecting the heavy weight of everyday concerns. But in the end, joy prevails - the opening spirit returns with renewed vigor, encouraging the audience to let go and simply be happy.” 🌸

Last but not least, we are excited to share Festival alum Veda Hingert-McDonald , who recently won the NUMUS Emerging Canadian Curator Competition .

Veda is curating a concert this Sunday, March 22nd, in Waterloo, Ontario, at Burton Factory Arts.

One of the pieces included is a new arrangement of a song cycle Veda composed called β€œTo Bear Witness,” which is inspired by children in Palestine, political violence in Colombia, the Berlin Wall, and the aftermath of the bombing of Guernica. πŸ₯€
