Cosmogenesis 2026: Exploring the Powers of the Universe as Spiritual Guides is a six-week live Zoom course led by Penny Andrews, a former Deeptime Network Coherence Guide, is beginning Wednesday, September 16.

The course explores the 13.8-billion-year story of the Universe as a meeting place between science and spirituality. Through teaching, creative reflection, and emergent dialogue, participants will explore cosmological powers not simply as ideas about the Universe, but as creative forces also moving through our lives, relationships, imagination, and spiritual practice.

No previous study of cosmology or Creation Spirituality is required. Beginner's minds are warmly welcome.

At the midpoint of a month devoted to Economy and Ecology, the framework Thomas Berry articulated across his career offers a particular lens on where the scholarship has landed.

Berry argued throughout his work that the economic frameworks the modern industrial world inherited were founded on a cosmological error. And every subsequent economic framework that operated inside this error inherited its costs. These errors resulted in treating the universe and our Earth-household as a collection of objects available for human use, rather than as a communion of subjects whose voices and standing are crucial for a flourishing human-Earth future.

The recovery Berry called for was structural. Not merely reform of the existing economic system, but reorientation of the underlying cosmology — with corresponding shifts in law, institutions, and daily practice. The Universe Story he developed with Brian Swimme is the cosmological scaffolding for that recovery. The rights of nature movement, gift economies, ecological economics, and integral frameworks like Doughnut Economics or Economy for the Common Good are, in Berry's account, its emerging institutional expressions.

The Great Work continues. The second half of August, on this account, will continue to devote itself to the traditions, scholars, and frameworks who have been carrying it forward.

Thomas Berry spent his life arguing that the ecological crisis is, at its root, a story crisis. Not a technology crisis. Not a policy crisis. A story crisis. We are destroying the living world because we are living inside a story that tells us it exists for our use — that it is raw material, backdrop, resource. And you cannot love what your story has turned into an object.

What Berry called for, in essay after essay, in lecture after lecture, across decades of solitary and urgent work, was a new story. Not a better argument. Not a more compelling policy brief. A story — one that could place human beings back inside the community of life, that could restore the felt sense of belonging to a universe that is alive, that could make the destruction of a river feel like what it actually is: the silencing of a voice in a conversation we did not begin and cannot afford to end.
Journey of the Universe is that story in film form.

Co-created by Mary Evelyn Tucker and Brian Swimme — both of whom worked closely with Berry — the Emmy Award-winning documentary traces 13.8 billion years of cosmic evolution with the precision of science and the register of poetry. It begins before the stars. It moves through the formation of galaxies, the birth of Earth, the emergence of oceans, and the first spark of life in the sea. It arrives at the present moment and asks: What will we do with this story? What does it mean to be the universe become aware of itself — and to be aware of what we are doing to it?

Berry wanted us to tell the story. Tucker and Swimme told it. The question now is whether we will live inside it.
