Yesterday, we had the opportunity to spend some time in historic Thurmond, West Virginia, including a paranormal investigation after dark. But with the recent news surrounding plans to demolish some of the historic structures within New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, this trip meant a little more to us than just ghost hunting.

Historic preservation is a huge part of our mission at Coal Country Paranormal. We investigate these places because of the people who lived, worked, struggled, celebrated, and left their stories behind. The buildings themselves are part of those stories.

We understand that preserving structures that have stood for more than a century isn’t always simple, and that not every building can be fully restored. But we hope every possible option for stabilization, preservation, leasing, or adaptive reuse is exhausted before demolition becomes the answer.

The Gorge already gives us examples of what preservation can look like. At places like Kaymoor, historic resources have been stabilized and preserved so visitors can still physically connect with West Virginia’s coal-mining past.

Once these pieces of our history are gone, we don’t get them back.

We hope West Virginians who love our state’s railroad, coal, and Appalachian history will learn about what is happening in Thurmond, make their voices heard, and advocate for saving and stabilizing as many of these structures as reasonably possible.

We want future generations to be able to stand in these places and experience their history — not just look at photographs of what used to be there.

And judging by yesterday’s crew… a few of Thurmond’s former residents may feel pretty strongly about sticking around too. 👻🖤

We’re ghost hunting somewhere tonight, and we want to see who can figure out where we are from this photo alone.
