Act NOW to oppose transferring corridor ownership and state funding for the proposed Shenandoah Rail Trail to the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, which opposes the rail trail and seeks an economically infeasible excursion rail service instead.

We had a BIG surprise this week (not in a good way) that threatens the future of the Shenandoah Rail Trail . A new proposal was presented at the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) meeting on December 9, leaving all of us shocked and frustrated.

Our friends at the Virginia Bicycling Federation (VBF) have just launched a new membership drive in time for Giving Tuesday.

VBF is a 501(c)(3) statewide nonprofit advocacy and education organization that--for decades--has been making Virginia more bicycling-friendly for everyone, and Active Prince William is proud to be an active member of the VBF coalition.

Now through December 31, VBF is offering a steep 50% discount on its first year of membership in every one of its categories--individuals, families/businesses, sponsors, patrons, and bicycling-related organization of all sizes and types.

Now is a great time to join VBF and support its ongoing work to improve Virginia for all bike riders. Go to: https://www.vabike.org/2023/11/27/vbf-launches-year-end-membership-drive/

Before heading to your polling place, please check out our questionnaire for the Prince William Board of County Supervisor (BOCS) candidates, This candidate survey covers our six priority issues for creating a more livable, equitable, and sustainable county.

Specifically, we asked all BOCS candidates whether they support 1) creating a comprehensive and strategic active mobility plan for Prince William County (PWC), 2) completing all planned PWC segments of key regionally significant trails by 2030, 3) holding advance public hearings on new transportation project funding requests, 4) establishing a citizens transportation advisory commission, 5) participating in an established VDOT program to cost-effectively reconfigure suitable roadways during scheduled roadway resurfacing, and 6) ensuring that the proposed Route 28 Bypass—if built—will incorporate robust active mobility components.

A majority of the BOCS candidates have responded very favorably to this survey. The survey questions and all candidate responses can be reviewed on Active Prince William’s website at https://www.activepw.org/?p=2375

Kudos to City of Manassas, VA - Government for replacing its hazardous rigid black steel bollards at both entrances to the Winters Branch Trail with much safer white flexible posts with reflective tape. For background, see https://activepw.org/?p=1547
