As America prepares to mark our 250th anniversary of independence, we reflect on the generations of men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their sacrifice helped preserve the freedoms and opportunities that have shaped our country's story for 250 years.

This Memorial Day, we honor their courage, remember their service, and express our deepest gratitude. May we never forget those who gave everything for our nation.

This May, DAR is honored to celebrate National Historic Preservation Month. Historic preservation is a cornerstone of DARs mission and a vital part of preserving America’s story. Across the country, DAR members work year-round to restore historic sites, preserve archival treasures, and ensure the legacy of our Founding generation endures for future generations.

We are excited to spotlight a recent project to stabilize and restore an original 1819 Binns engraving of the Declaration of Independence for display in the DAR Museum’s latest exhibition, Revolution in Their Words. Today in History April 30, 1789
George Washington took office as the first President of the United States.

Federal Hall in New York City, the first capital of the United States, Washington took the presidential oath of office. Though filled with great anxiety, Washington shared in his First Inaugural Address that he was assuming the role "in obedience to the public summons," and he explained that "the voice of my Country called me." With a hand on the Bible, a "sacred volume" borrowed from a local Masonic lodge and subsequently known as the "George Washington Inaugural Bible," he swore his oath as the first president of the United States.

We are wrapping up , but for DAR members, every month is an opportunity volunteer. Already in 2026, DAR members have contributed more than 800,000 volunteer hours. We are proud that DAR is a founding partner of America Gives, an initiative of the America250 Commission inviting all Americans to honor the Semiquincentennial by making 2026 a record-setting Year of Service.

Thank you to our members for strengthening communities through meaningful outreach in historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Tell us how you are volunteering on a local level to honor America’s 250th Birthday.
