Greetings, engaged citizens,
We want to update you on some recent occurrences relating to the Sundog Connector. The Sundog Connector Design Concept Report is "received, is unlikely to proceed, but not dead.” The CYMPO Executive Board receiving the Final Design Concept Report means that it was deemed complete and done properly and released payment to the AECOM consultant team. The vote to receive brought the study to its conclusion but did not determine further actions. At this meeting, Mayor Goode stated that we need to begin the SR69 improvements, and that the connector road would be a detriment to Prescott. He also acknowledged legitimate concerns over emergency access but thinks the benefit of a reduction of one-minute travel time via the connector is not worth the cost. A group of Yavapai Hills homeowners is currently collaborating with City staff to devise logical and low-impact emergency and evacuation routes from some neighborhoods of concern. Cactus Place to Robin Drive is a probable egress for consideration.
Even though there appears to be no appetite to proceed with any more planning at this time, it's possible that plans to build this highway could be exhumed! To help keep it at bay, Sundog DISconnect is working on the process to prevent Sundog Connector plans from being included in the 2025 City of Prescott General Plan.
The reasons? Let's start with excessive costs, limited benefits, community opposition, wildlife endangerment, habitat destruction, noise, pollution, and negative impact on neighborhoods and the Regional Park. Another is that the mention of the word "Sundog" or the words "Sundog Connector" in the 2015 General Plan were repeatedly used as a justification for proceeding with and promoting the plans. Yet none of these references suggested the Connector be constructed or that the public had "voted for it."
We think it's best to clean up that part of the General Plan's Circulation Element, and we'll keep you informed. Thank you for your continued interest and advocacy!
