K.A.M.O.(Kids and Mentors Outdoors) - was thought of by outdoor columnist Mark Walters and exists to give children the access to a variety of experiences that should help them develop an appreciation for nature, a stewardship ethic and a knowledge of outdoor traditions to carry forward. It is 1 of many chapters within the state of Wisconsin.

Final Day, Outstanding Day. We concluded with one last sit before undertaking dorm and lodge cleaning prior to departure. The 2025 Joe Hunt was exceptionally cold yet remarkably successful. A total of 15 deer were harvested, with all specimens set to undergo testing and distribution among the 23 participating youth hunters. D&G out of Poynette will handle processing for us, for which we are grateful. Our sincere appreciation extends to all volunteers who provided meals for the kids and mentors, as well as to the landowners who generously allowed us to utilize their land, stands, and heaters, and assisted with trail maintenance.

The second day proved to be a protracted and cold experience for the KAMO Kids, but their determination yielded results with seven additional deer harvested. The highlight followed with Bingo,Brownies and Sassy Cow ice cream. Notably, appreciation is extended to dedicated mentor and volunteer.

The JOE – An annual Youth Deer Hunt held each December
KAMO holds an annual Learn To Hunt (LTH) program for novice deer hunters at the MacKenzie Center in Poynette, WI. For more information about the state’s LTH program, visit the “Outdoor Skills” section of the dnr.wi.gov website or see the kamokids.org website.
The first MacKenzie hunt took place in 2009. This popular event continues each year and takes place on the second weekend in December. The hunt’s organizers pair KAMO’s experienced mentors with first time novice hunters. These pairs hunt together in the Poynette area, food and games are also offered at the center.
The hunts were originally organized and managed by Joe Stecker-Kochanski, who passed away in July of 2012. In honor of all of his hard work, dedication, outdoor passion, and friendly out-going spirit this premier annual hunt has been named ‘The JOE’.
