Pownal Maine Scenic and Historical Society

Pownal Maine Scenic and Historical Society Dedicated to promoting the scenic beauty and history of Pownal, Maine.

Reminder: Our summer meeting will take place at Mallett Hall this Saturday, June 20 from 2:00 to 4:00 o’clock.

After Sue Clukey’s illustrated talk, we’ll hear reports on recent and future developments. There will be displays that many members have not seen. I will announce an upcoming members-only tour of a house, dating from 1775. It may well be the oldest existing one in Pownal.

There will be a brief business meeting during which we will take a vote on two changes to our bylaws plus a policy change. Hope to see you there!

As classes at RSU #5 wrap up this week, it’s the perfect time to think about bus transportation, and how it’s changed in Pownal. On the left a picture of a school bus from days gone by, versus today’s buses. Pictured is current Pownal bus driver, Jessica Brown (photo credit to Jennifer Winkler Williamson). Which bus would YOU rather ride in?? 🚌

Ever passed under the railroad tracks on Allen Road on your way to New Gloucester and wondered why the entrance is so small? That is due to the narrow requirements of horse and wagons back in the late 1800's/early 1900's when the overpass for the train was built. Up until then this crossing was apparently one of the most dangerous in the state of Maine. It logged in several fatal (and some nearly so) collisions between train and horse & wagon. One of the below newspaper clippings references an estimate to build the bridge crossing that (in 1909) would cost $10,500. That is the equivalent of almost $384,000 in present day prices! 😲
Check out some of the clippings below, as well as present day pictures.

Colonel Henry I. Warren (1797-1876) was well-known in town. This advertisement was placed in the former Portland Daily Press back in March 1877. His home was located across from the Warren Cemetery in West Pownal. PSHS Member and former teacher, Sue Clukey, did a fun archaeology project with Pownal Elementary 5th graders back in April with artifacts from this house!! 😲

Mark your calendars for our summer meeting on Saturday, June 20th from 2-4pm. Sue Clukey will be offering a fun presentation on local archaeological digs in Pownal. A short business meeting will follow, for which we’ll need as many members present as possible to vote on some PSHS by-law changes. There will be goodies & refreshments- come on out! 🪶

North Pownal intersection, in about 1910 (we aren’t 100% sure, but close), as well as in present day. The larger building in the center of the first photo was the Golden Cross Hall. Partly visible to the right of the Hall was a small cape which was purchased, torn down, and burned on sight around year 2000. It had been badly neglected and was in disastrous condition.

Do you have memories of either of these old buildings?
