Happy ! Today’s highlighted native species is the Spotted Sucker (Minytrema melanops)! Spotted Suckers are widely distributed and can be found throughout the United States in the Great Lakes, Mississippi, Atlantic and Gulf Slope drainages. Habitat ranges from streams to large rivers and even lakes, with the species often occupying deeper, slower pools but traveling into faster water to spawn in the spring.

Scroll to slide 3 to see a video of Spotted Suckers aggregating for their annual spawning run, featuring an appearance from our beloved Bartram’s Bass!

Big news! The Bartram’s Bass has officially been described as its own distinct species!

Its scientific name - 𝑀𝑖𝑐𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑢𝑠 𝑝𝑢𝑐𝑝𝑢𝑔𝑔𝑦 - refers to the nickname given to explorer and naturalist William Bartram by the Seminole-Creek people of Florida, and translates to “flower hunter”.

Thanks to a cooperative effort of genetic sampling and extensive research, the recent paper by Freeman et al. describes both the Bartram’s Bass and Altamaha Bass, two species facing great risks as a result of nonnative species introduction.

NFC’s work spotlighted on traveling brook trout display!

NFC Executive Director Bob Mallard and National Chair Emily Bastian stopped by Cabelas in Scarborough, Maine, to see “Chance” the traveling brook trout display by artist Joey Rizzo.

We were introduced to Joey by Dwayne Shaw, Executive Director for Downeast Salmon Federation. DSF and Downseast TU had provided Joey with 2x3’ signs for inclusion in his traveling brook trout display. The idea was to have Maine NFC do the same.

In addition to a 2x3’ sign spotlighting lake and pond brook trout, NFC gave Joey a Maine State Heritage Fish sign ands a Sea-Run Brook Trout sign for the display.

NFC would like to thank Joey Rizzo for helping to draw attention to wild native bell trout and the threats they face and for spotlighting NFC’s work.
