September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 9/30

Each day last September we shared alarming facts about childhood cancer, like the low survival rates and how little funding and attention kids' cancer gets...

This year we decided to show you exactly what cancer and it’s treatment does to children. It’s not all cute bald heads, giggles and smiles like some commercials might have you believe. It’s exhaustion, swelling from steroids, bruises and sores, and sadness. There are tough days, really tough days without smiles.

Tonight was our annual Columbus City Hall Illumination Ceremony. It was truly unbelievably fun, hopeful, and emotional. Listening to the cancer warriors speak and tell their stories was so impactful. They are stronger, braver and more resilient than any adult I know. Thank you Bella, Logan, Quinn, Gracie and Emberly.

I shared a little tonight about my why and how grateful I am to my friends who have supported me since the start!

In 2018 Columbus City Council Shannon G. Hardin answered my request and proclaimed September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in Columbus, Ohio. He and Congress member Shayla Favor continued to support my request every year.

Then 3 years ago (well 4 but the first time I ask about a city hall lighting event on the lawn after I heard about the possibility, we couldn’t find an available date.) So 3 years ago I got word from Councilmember Melissa Green in President Shannon Hardin’s office my illumination ceremony was a-go. I worked with Joseline and John and was so excited this was finally happening but I was unfortunately hospitalized as we began the planning. I was not going to let this opportunity pass so called the person I knew could and would help me pull it off, Ellie Hite.

Ellie and I team up for many childhood cancer “things” and I couldn’t pick a better partner and friend. Thank you for always being willing to work with me, Ellie. It means the world to me.

I also want to thank my group of family and by friends for always stepping up to help out by doing whatever is needed. My daughters, Barbara-Raye and Melissa, Westerville teachers Ben
and Ree and my besties Nancy. Lisa, Jeff. I love each of you more than you know.

And lastly, Thank you to each and every one of you who came out tonight. I realize I would likely be like the majority of people who think childhood cancer is rare, if it wasn’t for my first grade student, Faith.

I will always do my best to keep your memory alive, Faith…Pinky promise.
