PRESIDENT MESSAGE
My best wishes to all in this month of October as we continue to celebrate our heritage.
We kicked it off with a lovely ceremony at the Italian Center (pictures https://opa.cig2.usa.canon.com/s/cp/EtjEccEKgAj) and followed it up with a walk on the Walkway on Columbus Day.
Aggie Collini, Janet Shanley and I carried the NIDO banner greeting other walkers and wishing them a Happy Columbus
Day. The response was so positive--I only wish that a few more NIDO members were with us to enjoy it.
We enjoyed lunch at Amici's after our walk where we were joined by Tomasina Stoppini, her daughter Dina and Faith
Nesti. Our October speaker, Dr. Vincent Beltrani, did a wonderful job speaking about the early immigrants to the Hudson
Valley.

Those who attended were thoroughly educated about the earliest residents--the American Indians right up
to the Italians who inhabited the Little Italy in Poughkeepsie's first ward. There will be a presentation of the film
"Crossing Waters" at the Wallace Center at the FDR site On Friday, October 28th at 7pm. The documentary
focuses on some of the first ward residents. Lou Strippoli and Frank Cordaro, two of the businessmen in Little
Italy, are interviewed in the film.

Try to get there as I know you will enjoy the story of immigration presented by the
film maker, Jane Watson. I am working on getting the film shown at the Italian Center for our November 3rd
meeting date. It will be a cooperative effort on our part to get the Italian Center and the Ladies Auxiliary to join us.

Our Tavola Italiana date for October is the 28th--please note the change of date. There are five Saturdays in
October and our Tavola will be on the fifth Saturday for this month. Please mark your calendar. I will meet with
the chef in advance of the date to get an interesting meal. Bring a friend--the more the merrier. Remember our
motto--"a tavola non si invecchia mai.

"Attendance at our monthly meetings has diminished. Please join us and enjoy the programs presented. Your input is appreciated and if you have any suggestions, please do not hesitate
to call and discuss them. See you on the 28th and don't forget the first Thursday meeting, November 3rd.
Ciao, Rosemarie

Our founding member Dr. Gaetano Cavallaro (RPh, MD, Historian, and good-old Sicilian Boy!!!!!) was always an astounding repository of knowledge for us.

Language, history, culture, customs, etc. Doc was a go to guy.

Further he worked tirelessly for NIDO for over 30 years and for and the Italian-American community from boyhood through his professional career and continuing through his retirement.

I share with you his latest accomplishment: the U.S. government has acknowledged him as an expert on the First World War especially as it relates to Italy and has commissioned him to work on projects for them. To put it a different way he is now RPh, MD, Historian, good-old Sicilian Boy, and a Federal Agent of sorts!

Dear VERY accomplished and talented friends of NIDO, Franc Palaia and Joseph Bertolozzi, will be presenting on April 29th at the Poughkeepsie Barnes & Noble a CD and book signing for Joseph Bertolozzi's Tower Music CD and Franc Palaia's book "Tower Music/ Musique de la Tour".

Franc's book is a photographic diary of Bertlozzi's musical project where he used the Eiffel Tower to record sounds and compose a full CD of original songs using only the thousands of sounds he recorded during two weeks in Paris in 2013. The CD is being released the same day as the book.

Franc will be presenting a solo show of 30 of his Tower Music photos at Vassar College in June to July 2016
You can see a 5 minute video that the NY Times made of Joe playing the tower on youtube at Bertolozzi Tower Music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJvnrITCPGA) or on Franc's website, www.Francpalaia.com.
