The Oregon Mediation Association

The Oregon Mediation Association OMA was founded in 1986. In addition, OMA and its supporters work to transform the ways in which Oregonians resolve conflict.

The Oregon Mediation Association (OMA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of members committed to the development, support and advocacy of mediation in the state of Oregon. Membership in OMA provides opportunities for mediators to work together to elevate the quality and expand the availability of mediation programs and services in Oregon. OMA seeks to shift away from the traditional adversarial approach to conflict toward a collaborative mediation approach.

๐Ÿ’™ Ever wondered how mediation actually works?

It's simpler โ€” and more powerful โ€” than most people think.

Here's mediation in 5 steps:

1๏ธโƒฃ VOLUNTARY AGREEMENT
Both parties decide to try mediation. No one is forced. It begins with a shared willingness to resolve.

2๏ธโƒฃ MEET YOUR MEDIATOR
A neutral, trained third party is selected. The mediator guides the conversation โ€” they never take sides or make decisions for you.

3๏ธโƒฃ OPEN CONVERSATION
Each side shares their perspective in a safe, confidential space. Everyone is heard โ€” often for the first time.

4๏ธโƒฃ FINDING COMMON GROUND
With the mediator's guidance, both parties explore needs, interests, and possible solutions together.

5๏ธโƒฃ MUTUAL AGREEMENT
A resolution that both parties helped create โ€” and are far more likely to honor.

No judge. No loser. Just a solution you both chose.

"Peace begins with a smile." โ€” Mother Teresa

In mediation, the smallest gestures carry the greatest weight. A calm voice. An open posture. A willingness to listen before speaking.

Peace doesn't start in a courtroom or a contract. It starts in a moment โ€” a decision to choose understanding over opposition.

Start your week with that intention. ๐Ÿ’™

โš–๏ธ Still on the fence about mediation? Here's what most people don't know โ€” and what changes everything once they do.

โœ… YOU STAY IN CONTROL
Unlike going to court, mediation puts the decision-making power back in your hands. You and the other party work together to create an outcome that actually works for both of you โ€” no judge, no imposed verdict.

โšก IT'S EFFICIENT
Most cases are resolved in just 1โ€“3 sessions. No years-long court battles. No endless back-and-forth. Just focused, guided conversation that moves you forward.

๐Ÿ”’ IT'S CONFIDENTIAL
What's discussed in mediation stays in the room. It's a private process โ€” giving everyone the freedom to speak openly without fear.

๐Ÿ’™ LESS CONFLICT. MORE CONTROL.
Mediation helps you save time, reduce stress, and move forward โ€” with dignity intact on both sides.

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Memorial Day โ€” a day to remember, reflect, and recommit to peace.

Today we honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to this country. Their courage, their devotion, and their love of peace are a reminder of why the work we do matters.

At the Oregon Mediation Association, we are dedicated to building peace โ€” in homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities across Oregon. It is quiet work. Everyday work. But it is rooted in the same belief those who served died defending:

That people deserve to live in peace.

On this day, we are humbled by their sacrifice โ€” and more committed than ever to honoring it through our work.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ We remember. We honor. We carry it forward.

๐ŸŒฟ A gentle reminder for every mediator:

"Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes." โ€” Anne Lamott

You hold space for people in their most difficult moments. That takes an extraordinary amount of emotional and mental energy.

Mediator wellness isn't optional โ€” it's essential. You cannot show up fully for others if you're running on empty.

This week, give yourself permission to:
๐ŸŒฑ Rest without justification
๐ŸŒฑ Step away from the screen
๐ŸŒฑ Do something that restores YOU

You are your most important tool. Take care of it. ๐Ÿ’š

Here's what no one tells you about unresolved conflict:

It doesn't just go away. It grows.

Whether it's a workplace dispute, a family disagreement, a neighbor conflict, or a business breakdown โ€” conflict left unaddressed costs more than you think:
โŒ Time lost in endless arguments
โŒ Legal fees that drain resources
โŒ Damaged relationships that don't recover
โŒ Emotional toll on everyone involved

โœ… There's a better way: Mediation.

Studies show mediation has an 80%+ settlement rate and can save up to 70% compared to litigation โ€” with outcomes that actually last.

OMA connects Oregonians with trained, trusted mediators who can help.

๐Ÿšซ MYTH: "Mediation means one side loses. Someone has to give in."

โœ… FACT: Mediation is specifically designed so BOTH parties win.

Unlike a courtroom where a judge decides who's right and who's wrong, mediation puts the power back in the hands of the people involved.

In mediation:
โœ”๏ธ Both parties shape the solution together
โœ”๏ธ No one is forced to accept anything
โœ”๏ธ The goal is mutual understanding and agreement
โœ”๏ธ Outcomes are more durable because people chose them

Don't let this myth keep you from a better option.

Mediation works โ€” and OMA is Oregon's home for trusted, trained mediators.
