Portland held its annual Tunnel to Towers 5K on Saturday to honor the firefighters who lost their lives during 9/11 and to fundraise for their families.

Nearly 3,000 people died 25 years ago on 9/11.

This day didn’t just change the lives of the families who lost someone in those horrific attacks. **It changed all of us. It changed an entire country.**
September 11, 2001, is a day that will forever be burned into our hearts and our memories. There is hardly a person alive who doesn’t remember where they were, who they were with, or the moment they realized that our world had changed forever.
We watched in disbelief as the unimaginable unfolded. We saw people running for their lives, while others ran **toward the danger** — firefighters, police officers, first responders, and ordinary people who became heroes in a moment none of us could have imagined.
Behind every number was a person.
Behind every person was a family.
Behind every family was a story.
And those stories didn’t end that day.
Mothers and fathers went home without their children. Children grew up without their parents. Husbands and wives lost their best friends. Brothers and sisters lost pieces of their hearts. First responders carried memories they would never be able to forget.
But something else happened that day, too.
For a brief moment, **we became one.**
Neighbors helped neighbors. Strangers hugged strangers. Flags appeared everywhere. We prayed together. We cried together. We stood together.
Twenty-five years have passed, but the memories haven't disappeared. The names haven't disappeared. The empty chairs at dinner tables haven't disappeared. And the love families have for those they lost will never disappear.
**We remember the 343 firefighters.
We remember the 71 law enforcement officers.
We remember the 184 lives lost at the Pentagon.
We remember the 40 heroes aboard Flight 93.
We remember every innocent life taken that day.
And we remember every family whose lives were changed forever.**
Twenty-five years later, we still carry them with us.
**We remember. We honor. We love. And we will NEVER forget.** 🇺🇸❤️

I truly hope everyone enjoyed their time at the race. It was such a fun, beautiful, and incredibly memorable day.❤️
There was something so special about seeing everyone come together, supporting one another, cheering each other on, and sharing so many smiles, laughs, and memories. After all the hard work that went into making this happen, seeing everyone enjoying the day made it all worth it. And the after-party was such an amazing success—it was the perfect way to celebrate such a wonderful day together.
We are so incredibly grateful for every single person who came out, whether you ran, walked, volunteered, donated, cheered, or supported us in any way. You all played a part in making this day so meaningful, and your support means more to us than you know. ❤️
We hope to see everyone—and even more of you—next year for another fun, beautiful, and memorable 5K. We can't wait to come together again, make more memories, and share another day! ❤️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️
