TeamLift, Inc. is a US-based nonprofit whose mission is to eradicate chronic poverty in Malawi by developing village campuses that address the related needs of education, healthcare and nutrition, with a focus on women and girls.
When traveling north on the M-1 Highway just outside of Karonga, it’s hard not to notice the gleaming St. Mary’s campus. Set high on a 69-acre plateau, St. Mary’s includes classrooms and laboratories; an administration building and computer center; a dining hall and two kitchens; dormitories and restrooms; a convent for the Marianist Sisters; sports fields; and 27 homes for teachers and staff.
The school campus took three years to build, employed some 300 local residents, and injected nearly US $4.0 million in the Karonga District economy. All of the money came from private donors in the U.S. and Mexico. The local chiefs and village families are justifiably proud that their daughters and granddaughters are training to be future leaders of one of the poorest countries in the world.
In the fall of 2016, TeamLift opened St. Mary’s Secondary School for Girls in Karonga, Malawi. The national boarding school welcomed 150 eager young women to its inaugural Form One class and 12 months later, 149 of those students completed their government exams. All of the girls returned this September, and were joined by a new Form One class of 150 students. By 2019, the school will educate 600 students each year.
