Willamette Writers

Willamette Writers A nonprofit organization that helps writers find their community, develop their craft, and expand their careers.

Join us at our annual Conference, July 30th - August 2nd, 2026, in Portland, Oregon and online. Willamette Writers is the largest writers' organization in Oregon and one of the largest writers' organizations in the United States. It is a non-profit, tax-exempt Oregon corporation led by volunteers. Elected officials and directors administer an active program of monthly meetings, special

seminars, workshops and conferences. Continuing with established programs and starting new ones is only made possible by strong volunteer support. Members continually explore other ways to interact in the literary community.

"Ahead of the submission season, I wonder what will arrive, who will volunteer to read this year, and will everything go according to schedule. Will the pieces we select still be available? Will they fit together into a coherent issue? How will everything be received? Our most current issue, #14, features writers whose work touches upon deeply human moments of people needing to find ways to make it through somehow. T.H. White, born May 29th 1906, was inspired to write The Sword in the Stone after reading Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur.

"I got desperate among my books and picked [Malory] up in lack of anything else. Then I was thrilled and astonished[...] Anyway, I somehow started writing a book."

"The Willamette Writers Screenwriters Chapter is planning to once again do an in-person writer’s room in Portland in June of 2026 [...] and I’m confident that we will once again end up with a fantastic script that will be read/performed at the WW Conference."

"...it's really important for authors not to be isolated, something that can easily happen when you are sitting at a table in front of a computer or a blank notebook trying to turn your brainwaves into imaginary people and events."
--Charlie Jane Anders in her 2025 Willamette Writers Conference keynote address, "How To Be A Resilient Writer."

In what ways have your writing community supported you?

"[Writing is] largely a matter of application and hard work, or writing and rewriting endlessly until you are satisfied that you have said what you want to say as clearly and simply as possible. For me that usually means many, many revisions."
Rachel Carson was a marine biologist, conservationist and the author of "Silent Spring" (1962), the book often credited as inspiring the environmental movement.
