LOCAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:
Gavin Eveland is a Portland oil painter who shattered every notion of what the form should look like on the surface. The subject matter is a atomized, disjointed, and recomposed, displaying naked bodies and strange, nearly creatures; figures metamorphoses into dynamic experimentations with multiple facets of human nature.

Gavin was born and raised in Moscow, Idaho. His childhood and adolescence were surrounded by creativity and exposure to the arts. From observing his older brother, Gavin became compelled to paint as a young child, establishing an everlasting drive in the painter’s life.

Gavin graduated from the Pacific Northwest College of art (PNCA) here in Portland, Oregon. He continues to reside in and show work throughout the city. Since college, Gavin has been inspired by the grotesque (grottesco), coined in the quattrocento Italien Renaissance to describe the art style rediscovered in Nero's Golden House. Grotesque inherited a counter-cultural imaginative spirit throughout the centuries that interested with his contemporary artistic vision. Chinese Artist HE Wenbin Discusses His Chinese Mona Lisa & Upcoming LIVE Zoom May 13th:

In this video link below, HE Wenbin discusses his Chinese take on the Mona Lisa. There are several things to notice. The first thing that you'll realize is that this Mona Lisa is Chinese. The landscape that was behind the original Mona Lisa, which was a traditional Tuscan landscape, in this painting has been replaced by a traditional Chinese landscape. The tradition in Chinese landscape painting was the use of ink, not oil paint, and that resonates with how HE Wenbin portrayed this landscape.

Importantly, this Mona Lisa is wearing pearls. Leonardo Da Vinci's painting did not have jewelry on the subject. Pearls are important symbolically, for in China they represent modesty, purity and wisdom, which is symbolic in HE Wenbin's painting as a foil against what is currently happening in China. The piece that HE Wenbin did was in line with how he uses the female figure in his work.

His time in West Africa shaped his mission for providing liberation through artistic opportunities for Africans and the Diaspora. Afreakano’s inspiration for art is to bridge the gap between Africans and their Diaspora to heal and celebrate their common roots for solidarity. To show the world African Lives Matter.
