Mom to Mom of Maine is a group that was built to support mothers in Maine. Today, some mothers in Maine and many mothers all over this country are suffering. The members of the Mom to Mom board have been discussing current events and wondering whether we should say something here. Whether making a statement that might be seen as political could be seen as the wrong move. But, as many people have said, silence is its own form of complicity. While our platform might not be large, it is still a platform, and we feel we have an obligation to say, clearly, that we condemn racism and all acts of hate. We have an obligation to say, clearly, that black lives matter.
Mom to Mom is an inclusive group that welcomes mothers of all backgrounds. We are a group of people that care deeply about the next generation of children growing up in this country. And we hope that this generation of black children will not grow up in a different America than our white children. We hope for a future where black children believe that the society they are growing up in will keep them safe and value them equally. We hope for a future where color is not invisible, but where our differences are celebrated and embraced.
We do not support violence and looting, but we support protestors. We support members of law enforcement who also believe in social justice and equality and we look for a future where we are all working towards the same goals: no more needless death; no more needless harassment; no more different standards of treatment. If we want to dismantle systemic racism, we need to work together, and we need to call it out when we see it. This is Mom to Mom, calling it out when we see it.
