Today, TU President and CEO Chris Wood joined Senator Martin Heinrich and Senator Ron Wyden on the Hill to defend the Roadless Rule.
“If you hunt and fish, roadless areas are the most valuable landscapes we have in America. One statistic that absolutely blew me away when we were developing the roadless rule: These lands represent 2 percent of the American landscape, and 25 percent of all of our threatened and endangered species find habitat in them. And don’t forget that these landscapes are high elevation landscapes, very low timber values, very expensive to get up into, often with very erosive soils,” said Wood. “Records show that a lack of roads has not stopped fire prevention measures. Lack of roads in inventoried roadless areas has neither prevented fuel treatment nor led to substantially more fire. Today, 80 percent of all fires are started by people, and 80 percent of all fires are started within a half a mile of a road. The idea that we would overturn the roadless rule, it defies economic, ecological, and common sense.”

ORVIS: Deschutes Fly Fishing Forecast/Report May 2026

May is the month for the lower Deschutes River!! We have been hearing good reports from our associates and customers who have been fishing the Deschutes recently.

Most of the best fishing action has been nymph fishing, and there have been some reports of anglers already seeing adult stoneflies in the bushes. They are freshly hatched, and it will take a little time for the trout to key into them for food.

Things will only improve over the next couple of weeks, and then we will be full throttle in the thick of the famous Stonefly/Salmonfly Hatch.

'Scientifically inaccurate': Wildland firefighters speak out against Roadless Rule repeal

A group of wildland firefighters are speaking out against the Trump administration’s proposal to repeal the Roadless Rule, a policy that has protected millions of acres of national forests.

The Roadless Rule, implemented in 2001, bans road construction, reconstruction and timber harvesting on about 59 million acres of property within the National Forest System.

On April 21, Firefighters United for Safety, Ethics and Ecology (FUSEE) — an organization advocating for safe and ecological wildland fire management — issued a letter opposing a repeal of the Roadless Rule.

The letter, which was signed by nearly 120 wildland firefighters, argues that repealing the rule banning road construction in national forests will actually increase fire risk.

President Donald Trump is invoking an obscure law that allows the military to pollute waterways in the Owyhee region.
This week, President Donald Trump declared the military’s supersonic jet flights over the remote Owyhee region are “in the paramount interest of the United States” — even if they pollute rivers and threaten fish.

He didn’t explain why the U.S. Air Force combat jet trainings are necessary over a remote sagebrush desert shared by Oregon, Idaho and Nevada. But his declaration comes two months into the war the U.S. and Israel launched against Iran.

The president’s determination exempts the military from federal and local water regulations, allowing it to pollute waterways in this high desert ecosystem as it trains combat jet pilots. It could undermine a three-year-old lawsuit that seeks to limit these flights, which have rattled the landscape with thunderous booms.
