In early September, we [the Wild Slamon Center] reached a milestone 25 years in the making. Federal fisheries agencies approved a 70-year plan to protect salmon, steelhead, and trout rivers and streams in Oregon’s Tillamook and Clatsop State Forests. These forests are home to a globally-important salmon stronghold.

Whether you’re new to our work or have been with us for every step of this journey, I hope you take a moment to celebrate this win with us. Despite a tough political environment, we continue to make real progress for salmon and rivers.

What this plan means for Oregon’s Coastal Rainforest:
Strong protections for streamside riparian areas, steep slopes, and headwater streams across more than 600,000 acres of state forest;
Increased salmon habitat restoration; and
Better timber harvest practices to protect wild fish throughout this acreage.

Local Trout Fishing: The Upper Clackamas, Collawash, Fish Creek, the Oak Grove Fork (upper Clack tributaries), and the Salmon River (Sandy River tributary) have all been providing fair to good trout
fishing.

Regarding the Clackamas River, you can fish at McIver Park, and it is open and not near the areas closed for the fires. Much of the upper Clackamas & Tributaries are in the closed area. It will likely stay closed through the remainder of the season. Luckily there are plenty of other awesome fly fishing opportunities.

Last week, it was announced that the the comment period to speak up for the Roadless Rule has been extended to October 6th.

Roadless areas protect some of the last intact trout and salmon habitat in the country.

ROADLESS RULE & ADVOCACY 101 TRAININGS THIS MONTH
Nothing is more powerful than a committed group of conservationists raising their voices to protect the lands and waters they love.
As you may have seen online or in Chris Wood's recent blog, the USDA announced on Aug. 18 it is moving forward with a plan to rescind the Roadless Rule that protects nearly 45 million acres of public lands - lands that support the vast majority of river habitat for native trout and salmon.

There is a very short, 30-day public comment period for this action - with comments required on or before Sept. 21.

As a TU volunteer leader, we are asking for your help to take action, spread the word and grow our advocacy impact around this and other critical issues. Here's how you can help:

While this immediate threat requires an immediate response, we are also looking to the future and working towards building the capacity of all of our councils and chapters to work with TU staff and partners on federal, state and local advocacy issues. To that end we are working to increase the number of volunteer Advocacy Coordinators we have - there are currently just over 100 chapters or councils (less than 30%) with a volunteer serving in that role - so the skills and resources we have nationally can benefit your state and local efforts long into the future.
