We grant Gifted Wishes to hospice patients to make the end of life as meaningful and fulfilling as possible. Our Wish Recipients come from diverse backgrounds, are of any age, but share the common ground of having one last wish prior to their journey ending. It is our humble privilege, through the continued help of our supporters, to assist in making those final wishes come true. This can be anything from basic needs like a warm sweater, a razor, or a large print Bible, to bucket list items like seats to one final Blazer game for a life-long fan, one final time to cast a line during a day of fishing, one last walk on the beach at the Oregon coast, or simply the opportunity to see and hold a grandchild for the first and last time.

The wishes that Gifted Wishes grants aren't extravagant. They're small, specific, and just what someone needs in their last days for comfort, dignity, and connection.

Kristi with VistaRiver shared some of the wishes that have moved her the most. The mom in hospice care who wished for a larger mattress so her kids could still climb up and cuddle with her, for the last moments they'd get together. And the wish of the musician who wanted a hearing aid, so he could hear his loved ones' voices one more time.

"Going through my own journey, I think when you're losing someone, you want to give them the entire world," Kristi said. "You want to make every last wish come true."

Matthew Kern is a hospice social worker in Portland. He sees, up close, how many ways a dying person can be left without support.

"Dying people are inherently really vulnerable — they're some of the most vulnerable among us," he told us. "And then there are people who are vulnerable for other reasons on top of that — their financial situation, being pretty isolated, not having family nearby to help them meet their needs."

It's part of why Matthew joined the Gifted Wishes Board. "There are a lot of things I didn't know about and didn't think about until I was doing this work," he said. "Gifted Wishes helps fill a lot of gaps."

Kristi gets asked a lot, “Does grief get easier?” Her honest answer: not really — it just becomes different. And you feel it both when you expect to, like on a birthday, or when you don’t, like waiting in line to get coffee.

Kristi lost her sister Stephanie to cancer after a two-and-a-half-year fight. In her interview with us, she said something that really hits home: "When you're losing someone, you want to give them the entire world. You want to make every last wish come true."

Kristi and her sister Stephanie were two years and three days apart in age, and they always celebrated their birthdays together.

This year, Stephanie would have turned 40. Rather than let the day go by, Kristi called her family with an idea: what if, instead, they raised money for Gifted Wishes in Stephanie's name?

"She made sure to say happy birthday to every single person she knew," Kristi told us. "This is a way to love on people the way that Stephanie always loved on people — and I wanted to be able to continue that for her, since she's not here to do it."
