Shout out to Speck's Records & Tapes for hooking our youth up with these custom crates from Morgan Harvey full of wax for sampling!

During Hip Hop Summer Camp youth learned how to sample from records and chop the sample for a beat. We have a dedicated sampling station set up in the Beat Lab so now it’s time to get busy!!!

Mani Draper will be in-town Headlining the Star Awards for Portland Hip Hop Week. He’s sliding through for a workshop on Saturday August 22nd at 11 AM to drop some gems on our youth. They will have an opportunity to learn about his work flow as he creates a beat live and then shares his writing process. We’ll take it to the studio next where youth will write their own bars and get a chance to spit on the beat. 10 spots available. Don’t sleep.

We’re grateful that Ascending Flow, Peer Tribe Foundation SoundsTruck NW & Ya Heard! get to be part of that work through music, mentorship, and creating opportunities for young people to be seen, heard, and supported. 🎤🌱

🎬🎤 FROM THE FIRST BAR TO THE FINAL PERFORMANCE.

This is what five days of hip-hop looked like. 🔥

Our youth learned the foundations of the culture, created their own MC identities, wrote their own bars ✍️, explored beat production 🎹, graffiti 🎨 and DJing 🎧, then brought everything together by performing their own music in front of their families and community. ❤️
For some, getting on the mic was something completely new. By the end, they were standing on stage sharing something they created. 🎙️✨

That’s bigger than a performance.

That’s finding your voice. Building confidence. Being seen and heard. Realizing what you’re capable of. 🌱💯
This is why we do this.

This is hip-hop. 🌊

🎤🎨🎧 5 days of hip-hop, creativity, community, and finding our voice. 🌊

From learning the foundations and history of hip-hop 📚 to writing bars ✍️, making beats 🎹, graffiti 🎨, DJing 🎧 and stepping up to the mic 🎙️, our youth got to experience hip-hop culture from all sides.

But what we’ll remember most are the smiles, the connections, the confidence being built, and watching young people discover new ways to express who they are. ❤️✨

Hip-hop gave us the tools. Our youth made it their own.
This is what it looks like when we Ascend with the Flow together. 🌊

Day 5 was LIVE. 🎙️✨

After a week of learning, writing, creating, and building confidence, our youth got to perform their own songs in front of their families and community. ❤️🏡

We watched them step on that stage, into their own identities, and into the power of their own voices. From being nervous to touch the mic to performing in front of a room full of people. That growth is what it’s all about. 🌱💯

The smiles said everything. 😊

This is why we do this. This is hip-hop. 🌊

Another day, another original element of hip-hop. This time, our youth stepped behind the turntables to learn the art of DJing. 🎚️💿

Huge thank you to AMBUSH for teaching the fundamentals of scratching, mixing, and reading the energy of a crowd. 🙌

My Voice Music was filled with the sound of scratching as our youth discovered another way to express themselves through hip-hop. 🎶🔥
