The OHSU Board of Directors has approved a resolution that preserves the research mission of the Oregon National Primate Research Center while committing to continued investment in scientific innovation and the refinement of animal research.

We are grateful to the Board for recognizing the importance of maintaining the unique expertise, infrastructure, and collaborative environment that have made ONPRC a global leader in biomedical discovery for more than 60 years.

This outcome would not have been possible without the hundreds of scientists, veterinarians, physicians, patients, advocates, students, and community members who took the time to share their voices. Your letters, testimony, and unwavering support demonstrated that Oregon values evidence-based science and the patients whose futures depend on it.

This vote is not the end of the conversation; it's the beginning of the next chapter. We remain committed to advancing ethical biomedical research, supporting continual improvements in animal welfare, investing in new technologies, and ensuring Oregon remains a leader in life-saving scientific discovery.

The future of life-saving science in Oregon needs your voice.
On July 27, the OHSU Board of Directors will vote on a resolution outlining the future of the Oregon National Primate Research Center. The proposal offers an important path forward by preserving ONPRC’s nonhuman primate research mission, scientific expertise, and critical infrastructure.

The Board will receive significant public comment from groups seeking to end this work. It is equally important that members hear from scientists, healthcare professionals, patients, advocates, and community members who understand its value.

Please submit your public comment by July 23 at 12 p.m. PT and share why ONPRC matters to public health, scientific discovery, Oregon’s research leadership, or your own life and work.

At the Oregon National Primate Research Center, ART stands for Assisted Reproductive Technologies—advanced tools that help scientists develop models to study diseases affecting millions of people worldwide.
Using techniques like IVF, embryo culture, and gene editing, researchers are advancing our understanding of conditions including Usher syndrome, Bardet-Biedl syndrome, and hepatitis B. These carefully developed models help scientists answer questions that cannot yet be answered in any other way, bringing us closer to new treatments and, ultimately, better patient care.
Just as importantly, this work is carried out by multidisciplinary teams that include veterinarians, animal behaviorists, surgeons, and animal care specialists who are committed to continually refining these techniques and supporting the health and well-being of every animal involved.

Our mission is simple: to foster respectful, evidence-based conversations about biomedical research, the patients it serves, and the dedicated scientists, veterinarians, and healthcare professionals working to improve the lives of people and animals.
We were inspired by the curiosity, kindness, and enthusiasm we experienced throughout the day. It reminded us that when we take the time to listen and learn from one another, we can have meaningful conversations about even the most complex topics.
